Crown Estate urges MSPs ‘not to intervene’ in operation
The body that serves as landlord for Crown property in Scotland faces a review by MSPs after its leading figures appeared at Holyrood yesterday.
The chairman of the Crown Estate, Ian Grant, who is also its Scottish Commissioner, pleaded yesterday with members of the Rural Development Committee not to intervene in the way it operates.
He claimed that handing over its estates or seaboard portfolio to anyone else, such as local authorities, would force them to buy in the expertise to operate them and would not be cost-effective.
But his pleas are likely to fall on deaf ears with SNP, Labour and LibDem members of the committee more convinced than ever that the body has failed to replicate in its own structures the devolution settlement in the UK.
Mr Grant offered to report to the committee on an annual basis, but insisted that the current structure was good for Scotland because it gave access to capital investment drawn from a UK-wide organisation.
Criticism of the Crown Estate came earlier this month when councillors from six councils in the Highland area as well as Highlands and Islands Enterprise and the local authority umbrella group Cosla told the committee of a "quite extraordinary" lack of accountability. Mr Grant today insisted it had a good record and said it had acknowledged the need to put its message across better. He told Tory MSP John Scott: "We believe the Crown Estate is operating in a beneficial way for Scotland."
But LibDem MSP Mike Rumbles questioned why the body raised more money than it spent in Scotland, and convener Roseanna Cunningham said the three senior officials who were present yesterday appeared to have "a Westminster mindset".

It would seem as if the Scottish political Parties are as on on this subject as in fact they should be . However I ask why is it only now that questions are being asked, we've had eight years of devolution. This question has always been there or is this another result of a Scottish Centric Government that is committed to a fair deal for Scotland.
It will be interesting to see what creatures scurry around when this stone is lifted. Hopefully we will be one Quango less and a little less of our fiscal blood will leak over the border.

Alex- well said. But let's applaud those other parties for showing some co-operation. Perhaps they will learn that we independents are not the enemy, but want to build a new Scotland that includes their voice.

So it raises more money in Scotland than it puts back into Scotland. Are we to assume then that this extra money is raised for the greater London beautification projects?

Yes, another unelected UK body that raises more revenue than it spends - just like the BBC with its misearable 3% spend in Scotland.
Seems also that the Crown Esates does not like the idea of semocratic accountability - but hey what's new. subjects, not citizens.
Fair play to all of the MSP's of all parties who are challenging this state of affairs.
This is an example as to why the Scottish people voted in their droves for a Scottish Parliament.

Actually thats not true, it was brought up at the beginning of this year under Labour, though only to cover coastal crown estate revenue etc, as I recall. So some credit is due to Labou...for once.....must have been an off day.
Thankfully This now seems to be extended to cover all crown estate property where today the moneys goes South.

When the 1999 Scottish Waters Boundries Act was past what input
had the Crown Estates. I bet you it wasnt benificial to Scotland .
How about letting us serfs know what Financial Monies goes south
into the coffers of the Unionists. I bet it would be a nice tax factor in
Scotlands favour.
