Swinson aims to cut wasteful packaging
 |
| SWINSON: Launched new bill. |
The Government last night conceded that rules to minimise excessive food packaging had not fully worked as a Scottish MP launched a parliamentary bid to cut down on supermarket waste.
Within minutes of Jo Swinson, the Liberal Democrat MP for East Dunbartonshire, launching her Packaging (Reduction) Bill, Joan Ruddock, the minister responsible for recycling and waste, acknowledged that voluntary agreements brokered by the government - the so-called Courtauld commitments - were a good start but she was now "pushing the supermarkets to go further". Some 90% of the UK grocery sector is signed up to stop packaging growth by 2008 and to a reduction by 2010.
Earlier, Ms Swinson launched her bid for an ambitious new law to create binding targets and a national organisation to enforce them.
Her bill would also boost powers for trading standards officers, allow consumers to leave packaging in supermarkets or send it back to manufacturers for disposal and introduce a carrier bag deposit scheme.
She explained how five million tonnes of packaging waste was sent to landfill sites every year, and families spent about £470 a year on packaging.

the last lib dem scots parly candidate put out the usual Focus leaflets claiming "labour-lib dem two horse race" and in the council elections they said "only lib dems can win here"..... but alas they came 5th behind the mainstream parties and the independent. they went from about 12 councilors down to 3 or something.
jo swinson is probably next to go unless there is some turnaround.

If it's unnecessary waste she wants to stop, she can start by stopping the crappy "It's A Two Horse Race!" guff that pops through my letterbox every couple of years. This in a constituency where the FibDems are at 8% of the vote.
Helluva lame horse.

Well I'm not going to be so dismissive.
I find it refreshingly honest that a LibDem is being honest for once about talking rubbish.

Jo Swinson is a typical under-experienced career poltician...she leaves school, goes to university and then straight into politics. Where's the real life experience? What can she really bring to the table appart from theory and rose-tinted thinking?
No, Miss Swinson - eagerness apart, - is about as useful an MP as my chocolate teapot...gawd ****, that's another new table cloth I need now...

Liberal democrat? In Scotland you say? This is news. I thought they were extinct here.
What was their habitat again I forget. I seem to remember it was dark and warm.

Agreed the lass is a waste of space. But our esteemed PM Gordon 'Bottler' Broon, head honcho of the London Labour and Unionist Party fits into that category. Surely you must see that at least HE is an exceptional individual that warrants your respect.

No real world experience and a life of theory.
Personally i would vote independent if any candidates wish to stand in lothians. The political system in the UK needs overhauled from party politics to a system that represents the wishes of the people NOT the party. [bold]Or even people like brown who espouse social and labour values and deliver tory ones.[/bold]
[bold]Any one who votes labour is a fool thinking it's the party "of ra peepel", All they actually are are tories who smelt the tide turning.[/bold]
