Dispute over Go Ape park plans to go before parliament
ALAN MACDERMIDFebruary 08 2008

The row over the controversial Go Ape treetop adventure facility in Pollok Park, Glasgow, is to come before the Scottish Parliament.

Jackson Carlaw, Conservative MSP for West of Scotland, has tabled a parliamentary motion questioning Glasgow City Council's determination to push ahead with the proposed project.

The motion also calls for a fresh consultation on the proposal, which is to be considered by the council's planning committee over the next two or three weeks.

Mr Carlaw said: "The level of opposition to this proposal is overwhelming, yet the council seems determined to push ahead regardless."

Objections to the scheme have ranged from the disturbance expected to other park users, and visitors to the Burrell Collection, to the fact that adults will be charged £25 and children £20 to take part.

It has now emerged that the operators expect a turnover of £1.3m a year but the council will make only £2.2m over the 21-year period of the lease.

Mr Carlaw added: "I have no quarrel with Go Ape. What they offer is held in high regard when in the right location, but the North Wood of Pollok Country Park is not such a location."

Mr Carlaw and concerned readers may be interested in the results of last week's independent survey of 238 members of the public (one more than Glasgow City Council's efforts), available here:

If I may digress a little, it is my understanding that the council were informed that it was illegal to charge people for using the car park outside the Burrell, yet they still operate ticket machines and related signs. Can anyone shed light on this?

I reckon there will be a series of "donations" to mr purcells party all under the level of reporting each made out form a variety of staff from a leisure company.....

WHY DOES GLASGOW PUT UP WITH THESE SELF ENGRACIATING CREEPS!

When they run out of parks to flog, like edinburgh, They start flogging of relatives.

Well thank goodness its a Tory who has tables this otherwise we would have Labour and the Lib-Dems screaming about the SNP getting involved in another Planning matter.

Exactly - notice how few posts there are and none from terminally hostile Unionists?

Surely there are other sites in Glasgow which would be more suitable to the Public than the very pretty Pollock park?
