I was very impressed by the article in the Borehamwood Times (August 20) regarding fraudulent applications for housing. I myself have been on Hertsmere Borough Council's list for approximately one year now. I have two boys aged five years and four months in a two-bedroom maisonette, I also have six flights of stairs with no lifts for help with carrying the baby's pushchair or with shopping.

At my last correspondence with Hertsmere, I was told that I still need more points and that at present my housing needs are adequate.

There are also families with children who are sufferers of asthma that have been told they are adequately housed. They have also been told that instead of using gas blow air heating they should get electric heaters, but most people are on low wages and are unable to afford the electric bills.

As yet they have not been able to satisfy my curiosity as to how they managed to give a new two-bedroom house to a single woman in her mid-forties with no dependent children or medical problems.

Since bringing this to their attention they have stopped her housing benefit, but as yet have not been able to give me an explanation as to why she is more eligible than me or anyone else in my situation for better and or bigger accommodation.

Mrs A S Gaskin,

Stratfield Road, Borehamwood.
