A special school catering for children in Borehamwood has received a glowing report from OFSTED inspectors.

Southfied School, which teaches four to 11-year-olds with moderate learning difficulties, was seen to be "a very good school with many excellent features" by inspectors who visited recently. Pupils were reported to be making very good progress in most subjects especially in English, maths and science.

"Pupils of all ages demonstrate extremely positive attitudes to learning," inspectors said. "They enjoy lessons and say they love school. They display very high levels of interest in their work and in most cases are able to concentrate well. They are happy and secure, becoming very enthusiastic and excited at times."

The quality of the teaching was also praised, with science and music tuition said to be "outstanding". The only unsatisfactory lessons noted were art and PE where expectations of pupils were too low. Information technology also needed improvement.

Inspectors said the curriculum was broad and balanced and methods of assessment were good. The partnership between the Hatfield school and parents was reported as being outstanding and resources as excellent.

Head Mike Philip said: "I am delighted with the report which really underlines the immense effort that all members of staff have put in to establish the school so effectively. I am very proud of the children who are making such good progress and who are clearly thriving in our happy and supportive atmosphere.

"It is our intention to build on this report and we will be acting on their suggestions for how pupils' progress in art and information technology can improve. We will also be developing our systems for assessing and recording how children are progressing. Above all, we aim to provide an even better level of education for the children in our care."
