North Middlesex 182

Brondesbury 183-4

Australian batsman Richard Sherman (88 not out) carried his bat in an impressive Middlesex County League debut to see Brondesbury to victory over North Middlesex with an over to spare at Harman Drive on Saturday.

Sherman, who has played grade cricket in Melbourne, showed his power, particularly off the back foot, with forceful pulls and cuts in a superb, aggressive knock. Hiten Parmar (32 not out) followed the Australian's example in a flourish as the visitor's attack came under fire.

Earlier, after skipper Mark Lowrey won the toss and put North Middlesex into bat, paceman Ricky Fay struck two quick blows, removing Smethers (6) and Ammaraweera (5).

As North Middlesex tried to rebuild their innings, their progress was painfully slow in the face of tidy bowling from Parmar, Rob Nelson, Lowrey and Bill Preest.

They had only totalled 182 off 55 overs, when the innings ended at 5.20pm, opener Saunders (41) and Perera (47) providing the backbone of their score.

Despite losing Ian Kidd (8) early on, there was no stopping Sherman, who made a steady start before upping the pace of his innings, hitting eight fours and a six.

Ammaraweera was the vistors' most succesful bowler with 2-42.

On Sunday Brondesbury notched up a win over Eastcote, rattling up a total of 211-8 (Beesley 76no, Kerai 35) and restricting the opposition to 185-5 (Dodds 1-49 off 16 overs).

Brondesbury, away to Southgate in the league on Saturday, visit league rivals Winchmore Hill in the second round of the Abbot Ale Trophy national competition on Sunday.

They will be looking to repeat the form of their 60-run win over Ilford in the opening round.

Holders of the Evening Standard Trophy, following their dramatic two -run win over Sevenoakes Vine in the final at The Fosters Oval last September, Brondesbury are seeded and have a bye to the third round.

They are scheduled to meet the winners of the second round game between Eastcote and North Middlesex.
