A CONVICTED drink-driver has called for drivers alcohol limit to be cut to zero in a bid to cut down on road deaths.

The Harlow man, reacting to the Citizens Judys Coming Home Appeal in last weeks edition, believes the only way forward is to stop people drinking and driving totally.

The man, who wishes to remain anonymous, acknowledged the Citizens efforts to reduce drink-drive deaths by funding a series of anti-drink-drive plays, but he believes prevention is a better solution than deterrents.

He said: Its not going to make that much difference unless people avoid alcohol altogther.

I am a convicted drink-driver, but at the time I was stopped by police, I didnt think I was over the limit. I had had just a couple of pints of lager because I thought I was being sensible, but when tested, I was one point over the limit.

I hadnt been reckless, and had not intended to drink-drive, but still Im a convicted drink-driver.

He believes that if people were not allowed to have any alcohol in the blood, people would not take risks by weighing up whether they are safe to drive.

There is certainly a grey area at the moment, he said. People drink up to how much they think they can, and many take chances, when they are probably just over the limit.

A change in the law has to be made to make any real difference to the current problem.
