Borehamwood 9 Maccabi 7

Winter League Knock-Out Cup Final (1st leg)

Four goals from inspirational leader John Moore helped Wood juniors to a 1st leg win over Maccabi in the Knock-Out Cup Final.

Wood sealed the triumph with a spectacular second-half display after finding themselves 4-2 down at half time. And they had substitute keeper Tom Payne to thank for holding on to their lead in the final quarter.

Payne replaced David Price, who played outfield, and made two remarkable saves as Maccabi threatened to cause an upset.

Wood started the match in the worst possible fashion and found themselves 2-0 down. It could have been a lot worse had Price not saved a penalty after only six seconds.

Alex Shaw put his side on the scoresheet right at the end of the first quarter. It was 2-2 early in the next period, thanks to a strike from John Moore. But a major foul conceded by Wood allowed the visitors to regain the lead and another defensive blunder left Maccabi with a 4-2 advantage. Wood opened the second half determined to reduce the arrears and Moore buried a penalty.

Giles Martin netted the equaliser as the period came to a close to set up an exciting finale.

Maccabi went 5-4 up, before Moore hit a quick brace to put his side in front.

However, Maccabi fought back and levelled matters up.

Wood found the strength to go ahead once more, with John Atkinson scoring, and then David Price gave his side a vital two-goal cushion.

Maccabi came surging forward but good defending allowed Wood to further strengthen their position.

Alex Shaw hit the ninth goal, and Maccabi completed the scoring with an effort just before full time.

Two members of the junior team are representing Great Britain in a four-day competition. Giles Martin and Daniel Williams will be in the squad to face Scotland, Belgium and Denmark in the North Sea Cup.

WOOD: Price, Moore, Shaw, Martin, Atkinson, Payne, Sturge, Debois, Williams.

Wood seniors recorded a 5-3 win over Basildon in their last Winter League clash of the season.

The result secured a top two spot for Wood, who never really hit top gear in the match.

Scorers were Alex Shaw (2), Dax Cain, Richard Hime and Robert Threadgold.
