Borehamwood police reminded householders this week to beware of bogus callers following two incidents in the area.

On Saturday afternoon two men in overalls, claiming to be council workmen, called at the Elstree home of an 82-year-old woman in Beethoven Road and asked to see her pension book. They were sent away when the woman became suspicious.

The men, both aged 35, who were white, with dark brown hair and southern accents, left in a small white van, police said.

And in another incident a householder in Beech Drive, Borehamwood, sent away a man claiming to be from British Gas without any identification.

The man was white, 5ft 10ins, unshaven, with dark brown hair and a southern accent, wore a dark blue overcoat and carried a clipboard.

Police warned householders to check identification at all times.
