Harlow 222-8 dec

Leigh on Sea 137-9

Harlow were denied a victory that their positive cricket deserved on Saturday when Sean Elliott, the Leigh No.11 survived the last five deliveries of the match from pace man Paul Mayhew. However, given that they were 40-4 after 10 overs, this recovery represented the best cricket that Harlow have played all season. Having been asked to bat first on a bouncy wicket at Chalkwell Park, wickets and boundaries were equally frequent in the first hour as Harlow struggled. Niraj Odedra and Duncan Mackenzie arrested the decline with a rapid 50 run partnership for the fifth wicket and after Mackenzie went, Simon Baulcomb and Odedra took the game away from Leigh with a sixth wicket partnership of 90. A large total looked on the cards with these two dominating the bowling, but when Niraj Odedra was bowled for a fine 74, two more wickets fell quickly and at 180-8, 200 suddenly looked a long way away. Then Paul Mayhew made his first contribution of the day, when he joined Simon Baulcomb for the final five overs of the innings. They blazed away to add 42 runs off 30 deliveries and move Harlow to their largest total of the year, 222-8, with Baulcomb undefeated on 57 and Mayhew on 13.

Harlow struck quickly after tea with Mayhew and Baulcomb again combining to remove the top four and put Harlow firmly in charge.

Niraj Odedra took three quick wickets at the start of the last hour gave Harlow a chance of victory. But with time running out, Harlow returned to the pace of Mayhew for the last over in an attempt to take the remaining two wickets. He got one of them with his first delivery (and finished with 3-20 in his best effort of the year), but was unable to repeat with his remaining five, leaving Harlow just short after playing all the positive cricket. However, the standard of Harlow's cricket after the first hour was encouragin as they remain in third place in Division Two.

The 2nd IX lost to Leigh by 6 wickets after they were 89 a/o and Leigh reached 90/4. The 3rd IX won by 6 wickets against Leigh declaring at 217-4 and Harlow went on to reach 218-4.
