It could be a summer of disruption on roads in the borough with three Transport for London projects.

Work to alter road layouts at Apex Corner in Mill Hill will begin in August and last for about 15 weeks. The scheme is currently out to tender.

A safety scheme planned for Broadfields Avenue, Edgware, on the A41, is also likely to begin in August following an invitation to tender in May.

Details of proposals to install a pedestrian crossing on the A1 Stirling Corner near Arkley are still being finalised.

Once this has been done there will be a public consultation and work could start this December or January 2002 after the Apex Corner scheme.

Andrew Dismore, MP for Hendon, has been pressing for the work.

"The need for a pedestrian crossing at Stirling Corner is vital to enable those who live on either side of that busy road to do their shopping," he said.

In a separate scheme, motorists who take short cuts during the morning rat-run will be slowed down by traffic calming measures to be built in Finchley.

Speeding cars, head-on collisions, and hooting horns have become the norm on weekday mornings in the residential roads between Ballards Lane and Nether Street, and residents have been campaigning for action to be taken for about three years.

After meeting with residents and the Church End Local Agenda 21 group, Barnet Council has decided to install raised road junctions, known as 'tables' at the corners of Wentworth Avenue and Wentworth Park, Cornwall Avenue and Grove Avenue, and The Grove and Grove Avenue.

At two points on The Grove and Grove Avenue, the kerb will be extended to help pedestrians cross safely.

A council spokeswoman said: "The measures will slow traffic down, improve safety and benefit pedestrians. The restrictions will also help to discourage parking in the immediate vicinity of the junction."

Work will start at the end of April and last for approximately two weeks.
