As chair of the Save Brook House campaign I welcomed your report, in last week's Borehamwood & Elstree Times, that Hertfordshire County Council is backing a plan to build new accommodation for elderly people on the Brook House site.

Having made our strong feelings known and presented a petition to Downing Street about the closure last year, one of our objectives has been to see the accommodation lost replaced in an appropriate form. It seems that this is a big step closer, and will be good news if it comes to fruition.

The other objective of our campaign has been to press for the return of the Borehamwood DayCentre to Borehamwood, from its temporary home at Heath House, Bushey. I am pleased to hear that this also is very much under negotiation. We look forward to a successful outcome as soon as possible.

In your newspaper a few weeks ago, you reported on the formation of a consortium of organisations and concerned individuals under the name of BAFOR (Borehamwood Action For Older Residents), which is lobbying for day centre/drop in facilities for the elderly people of Borehamwood.

Some years ago, Hertsmere Borough Council set aside a capital sum in the region of £500,000 for this purpose, but no scheme has yet got off the ground.

In view of the fact that day centres are being considered for inclusion in the Brook House redevelopment scheme and at Three Ways Community Centre, BAFOR has asked the borough council for a recommitment to such expenditure at the earliest opportunity, for the benefit of all the elderly residents of our town.
