Members of the Greenwich Borough Mariners' Swimming Club have been busy and in tremendous form in three competitions.

The 10-13 years age group attended the Future Champions' gala at Ladywell, achieving

excellent results.

Among the 11-year-olds, Andrew Smith earned the Top Boy award after winning a gold in butterfly and silvers in both freestyle and backstroke races.

Joshua Pemberton-Hill (10 years) was the runner-up for Top Boy prize after he won a gold in the backstroke and bronzes in both butterfly and freestyle events.

Chris Henry won gold in freestyle, while Sam Pemberton-Hill reached three finals. The club's other finalists were Lea Galea and Chris Place.

Meanwhile, at an Inter-Club gala held in Sevenoaks, the Mariners fielded a team made up of novices, swimmers returning to competition, and some regular club swimmers.

Practically all achieved personal bests and Daniel Wood, Jonathan Fordham, Laura Palfrey and Chris Burnie all won their respective events.

And to round off a great week for the club, Claire Sweeney, Justin Palfrey, Colin and Kevin Arundell all came back with plenty of medals from the Southern Counties Masters' gala held at Barnet Copthall.

Kevin produced an oustanding set of swims and showed his versatility by winning all seven of his events in the 19-24 age group, again bettering his British Masters' record in the 100 metres breaststroke.

He also took three seconds off the British Masters' 200-metre breaststroke record for his age group.

Colin Arundell won gold in 100 metres freestyle, while Justin Palfrey was a triple gold medalist by winning the 200 metres individual medley, as well as the 50 and 200 metres backstroke. Claire collected three silvers and three bronzes.

THERE is just no stopping the Sharks Swimming Club at present.

Last we we reported on the club's fantastic medal-haul in the National Swimming Championships held in Reading.

Then members of the club took part in the Astra Gala held in Sevenoaks Pool with many relay and individual successes.

The four-strong senior relay squad of Trisha Barrett (Eltham), Matthew Griffiths (Erith), Kay Instrell (Mottingham) and Ben Summers (Brockley) finished in an excellent second place.

Then three members of the regional final relay team went one better by winning gold.

The trio of Daryl Beaumont (Bromley), Sarah Louise-Casey (Erith) and Matthew McDaid (Chislehurst) also won individual medals, all in the 100 metres freestyle.

Daryl and Sarah-Louise won silver, while Matthew went one better by winning gold.

But perhaps te best swims of the gala came from the Sharks' junior members.

The relay squad of James Gray (Mottingham), Steven Rann (Mottingham), Katherine Mannion (Sidcup) and Emma Kent (Erith) won gold, as well as helping the club win the overall team title.

Individually, they all achieved podium places in freestyle events.

James and Emma both won silver in their respective 50-metre races, while Steven was runner-up over 25 metres. But Katherine took first prize when she won her 25-metre race.
