TENANTS who vandalise property are to be fined as Greenwich Council continues its war on graffiti.
It is charging vandals up to £500 for the damage which has blighted some council accommodation for too long, says council leader Councillor Chris Roberts.
He said: “We will not tolerate anti-social behaviour. The charges imposed are meant to pay for the damage done by vandals.”
The council employs a team to remove the vandalism. On average, the team removes 1,500 square metres of graffiti each year.
The fines are part of the tenancy agreement with residents, and can lead to Anti-Social Behaviour contracts, which lead to court action if broken.
A graffiti hotline is open to residents who see vandalism where they live. The council guarantees offensive graffiti will be cleared within 24 hours of being reported.
The hotline number is 020 8921 6881.
