To commemorate a victory over his biggest rival of the times, James Gibb, one of South London Harriers' brilliant runners of his era, presented the club with a cup bearing his name to be held for that year by the winner of the club's five-mile cross country championship.

That was back in 1877 when the club was in its infancy but James would be proud to know this traditional race is still hotly contested on Farthing Downs at Coulsdon each year.

Saturday saw the 113th occasion of this race and this year's recipient of the Gibb Cup was Anthony Harran, who covered the demanding five-mile course in 28 mins and 24 seconds.

Second was Ray Marriott in 28:40 and third was Paul Timblick in 28:54.

There were 35 entrants for this year's race, a little down on numbers of some years but the Cup was still as keenly contested and of the 35 there were six women taking part.

This year's winner of the ladies' championship was Sue Ashley in 38 minutes with Kathleen Southall second and Marnie Wilson third.
