Part Ten

Another of the principal themes of The Witch of Portobello is here discussed, that of the importance and power of music.

Coelho explains that this theme comes across strongly since it is a universal language. With music, everyone can understand the inherent feelings within the notes, he says, even if the lyrics are in a foreign language. This emotional response allows the listener to enjoy the music on a level beyond words. Books, on the other hand, must be translated.

Music can communicate directly with your soul and your body. Because of this, Coelho says he cannot write with music, as the tendency to become distracted is too much for his concentration.

Mentioning the ideas of psychoanalyst Carl Jung, Coelho believes that all civilizations have music, along with religion and an idea of beauty. Hence the use of music in his writing.
