Parents in a seaside town were warned to take extra care with their children last night after two men tried to abduct a 12-year-old girl.

The child was passing a silver car with two men inside as she walked along a quiet street in Irvine. One of the men opened the passenger door and grabbed her by the wrist. As he tried to entice her into the vehicle, the girl broke free and ran home.

She was unharmed but badly shaken by the incident.

Detectives are appealing for information about the attempted abduction which took place in Woodlands Avenue at 7pm on Sunday.

It is believed that the two suspects drove off in the direction of Bank Street.

The driver of the vehicle is believed to be white, between 20 and 30 years old with blond hair. The passenger spoke with a local accent.

Detective Inspector John Hogg, leading the inquiry, said last night: "I would like to reassure the public that everything possible is being done to trace whoever is responsible for this incident.

"I would also remind parents to stress to their children the importance of never going off with strangers. If they are approached by strangers they should run, yell and tell another adult.

"We will be working closely with local schools and the education department of the local authority to raise awareness with children."
