University aims to bridge bilingual gap
ALISON CHIESASeptember 30 2008

A new service to promote the benefits of bilingualism in children was launched by Edinburgh University yesterday.

Bilingualism Matters is a one-stop shop for parents looking for advice on the challenges and advantages of using multiple languages in everyday life. According to a recent government survey, more than 100 languages are spoken in Scotland and bilingualism is on the increase.

Experts at the university say this new service will help to inform the public about the benefits of bilingualism, and encourage families and teachers in supporting children's development of multiple languages.

Professor Antonella Sorace, of the university's school of philosophy, psychology and language sciences, said: "In many parts of the world it is common for children to be exposed to two or even more languages right from birth, but bilingualism is a relatively new phenomenon in most of Europe. There is a lack of information ... our aim is to bridge that gap."
