Exhibition hopes to have the last word
ALISON CHIESASeptember 08 2008

An interactive exhibition designed to explore the "magic" of words and featuring celebrated writers launches tomorrow.

Words 2008 aims to promote new literary talent in Scotland and also engage the wider public with contemp-orary writing and the creative process.

The exhibition is based on new work produced in the Edwin Morgan Centre for creative writing at Glasgow University, whose alumni include award-winning writers such as Louise Welsh and Rachel Seiffert.

The free event at the Mitchell Library in Glasgow runs until Saturday and members of the public are invited to join daily prose and poetry workshops. The exhibition also includes daily readings of new work and a documentary about students from the university's course.

A collection of short stories by this year's graduating students will also be previewed during the exhibition. A panel discussion on Thursday will explore the craft of writing.

Hosted by Keith Bruce, arts editor of The Herald, media partner of the event, it will feature, among others, writers Tom Leonard, Anne Donovan and Kei Miller.

There will also be a writing-inspired art installation by public artist Nicola Atkinson.
