The Scottish Government has been urged to intervene and ensure the survival of a famous textile firm which has gone into administration.

Some 52 workers have been made redundant at the Langholm Dyeing Company with 10 staff retained to help wind up operations.

However, after emergency talks yesterday, there are still hopes the company could be sold as a going concern.

Dumfriesshire, Clydesdale and Tweeddale MP David Mundell said: "Really that's the best thing that can happen because that ensures continuing employment on the site."

Mr Mundell urged government intervention and said he would be speaking to Finance Minister John Swinney.

The firm was the subject of a £6m management buyout in 2002, but has struggled against foreign competition.
