Family in plea for missing father to get in touch
ALISON CAMPSIEMay 13 2008

The daughter of a man missing for more than a week yesterday urged her father to get in touch as concerns grow for his safety.

David Findlay, a 69-year-old who suffers from dementia, has not been seen since he left his home in Glasgow to go for a stroll. Mr Findlay enjoys long walks, sometimes walking as far as Saltcoats in Ayrshire from Glasgow, and frequently enjoys trips to Clydebank and Paisley on foot.

He left his house in Cardonald on May 6 with £10 and no medication. After alerting police to his disappearance, the family have embarked on their own search for their father, whose condition is said to have deteriorated over the past two weeks.

His daughter Linda Campbell, of Paisley, said yesterday: "We just want him to give us a ring, just so we know he is safe. We just need to know he has not come to any harm. The worst bit is just waiting and waiting for any news.

"We tried to stop him from going out on his own, but we just couldn't do it. He is quite independent, keeps himself to himself, and is a keen walker.

"Sometimes he would be out all day and not return until late so we didn't think anything of it at first. But he has never been away like this before."

Police have used helicopters and dogs to search around Mr Findlay's home area, and other places where he is known to have visited, including Barshaw Park in Paisley.

Mr Findlay, a widower and former labourer, is described as 5ft 4in tall and of medium build with grey receding hair with gold-rimmed glasses. When he was last seen he was wearing grey trousers, a brown suede jacket, a grey jumper with white and red stripes and black shoes.

Mrs Campbell and her brothers Stephen and David have put up posters across Glasgow.

Stephen Campbell said: "He likes to go to the Barras and walk around there. There is a chip shop there, the Coronation Cafe, where he would go twice a week.

"They were shocked to hear that dad had gone missing. They haven't seen him for around four weeks now and are worried for him."

Inspector Robert Stevenson, leading the search for Mr Findlay, said was "remaining quite optimistic at this stage".

Anyone with any information regarding Mr Findlay should contact Govan Police Office on 0141 532 5455.
