Crazy golf as boat’s Final Fling ends up in a bunker
WILLIAM TINNINGMay 12 2008

Some of the world's best golfers have landed in bunkers at the home of the Scottish Open.

Yesterday - nine weeks to the day until this year's event concludes at Loch Lomond Golf Club - it was not the golf balls of celebrated players which were flying into the sand but an out-of-control speedboat.

Claude Bieth, 60, and his partner Catherine Guillet, were preparing to play their shots about 60 yards from the sixth green when the boat, named the Final Fling, hit the shore at high speed and flew 30ft through the air before landing in a green-side bunker.

Mr Bieth, who was playing as a guest at Loch Lomond for the first time yesterday, said: "It was like something out of a James Bond movie. I have played on many courses with water features but have never seen anything like this."

He added: "There was no-one on the boat. I was told the owner was about 100 yards out in the loch. He was thrown overboard after being hit by a double wave and the boat just raced out of control."

Strathclyde Police confirmed that a man had been rescued from the water following the incident. He was treated by paramedics at the scene.

A police spokesman said: "It appears to have been a complete accident. The matter is finished as far as we are concerned."

No-one from the course was available for comment last night.

A host of international stars are expected to play in this year's Barclays Scottish Open in July.

Colin Montgomerie was recently married in a lavish ceremony at the Loch Lomond club.
