A portrait of one of the nation's greatest poets, Sorley MacLean, has been gifted to Sabhal Mor Ostaig, the Gaelic college on the Isle of Skye.

The portrait, by leading Scottish artist Peter Howson, will form part of Sabhal Mor's permanent collection.

It was donated to Sabhal Mor by Lord Macdonald of Tradeston who, during his time as a chief executive of STV, commissioned the work to mark and celebrate a major STV series featuring the work of a number of contemporary Scottish poets.

The college's director, Professor Norman Gillies, said: "We are delighted to accept this very generous gift from Lord Gus Macdonald, who is a long-time friend and supporter of this college and who also, of course, has very strong family ties with this part of Skye.

"Sorley MacLean was one of the great poets of the 20th century and his profound and inspiring influence on the international literary world placed the Gaelic language and culture firmly within the context of his international vision.

"He will forever be an inspiring and iconic figure for the Gaels and as a former writer in residence' at Sabhal Mor Ostaig, occupies a very special place at the heart of this institution."
