Celtic have been ticked off by MPs for not taking goalkeeper Artur Boruc to task for revealing a T-shirt emblazoned with the words "God bless the Pope" after Sunday's Old Firm game.

Gregory Campbell, the Democratic Unionist MP for East Londonderry and a life-long Rangers fan, has tabled a Commons motion about Boruc's action, which has been backed by, among others, Peter Robinson, the East Belfast MP, newly elected leader of the DUP and expected to be Northern Ireland's First Minister when Ian Paisley steps down next month, and Michael Connarty, Labour MP for Linlithgow and East Falkirk.

In his motion, Mr Campbell expresses support for the "good work undertaken in combating sectarianism" by Rangers and Celtic, but "deeply regrets the actions of the Celtic goalkeeper".

Mr Campbell's motion says he was "saddened that this, the latest in a series of controversial gestures by the player, which have no place in football, has not brought censure from his club".
