THE cast and crew of one of Scotland's best-loved films were in Glasgow yesterday for a special silver anniversary screening of Local Hero.

The eccentric comedy, about a Texan oil company's attempt to buy up the fictional fishing village of Ferness, has charmed generations of Scots since it first appeared in 1983.

Directed by Bill Forsyth just two years after he made Gregory's Girl, the film is famous for its ensemble cast which included Rikki Fulton, Peter Capaldi, Burt Lancaster, Fulton Mackay, Jenny Seagrove, Alex Norton and Peter Riegert.

The screening, before a sold-out house at the Glasgow Film Theatre, was part of the Glasgow Film Festival.

Many of the original cast members, including Denis Lawson, Jenny Black, Roger Murray Leach, Tam Dean Burn and Jonathan Watson turned up for the show.

Lawson, who played Gordon Urquhart, a hotel owner and accountant in the movie, was at the screening with his sister, Carol McGregor, the mother of Ewan McGregor. Speaking of the enduring appeal of the film, he said: "That is one of the pleasurable things about this film - it's shelf life.

"It has lasted for so long, and is still much loved. The fact that it remains as funny today as it was back then is testament to just how amazing the script was."

Watson, who played one of the villagers in the film, took his eight-year-old son, Jack, to the film. He said: "When Jack watched a clip he recognised me straight away; in fact, he screamed out because my hair was a lot redder then and he hadn't seen me like that before. He is a redhead too."
