Pool stays closed as Legionnaires probe continues
WILLIAM TINNINGFebruary 14 2008

A PUBLIC swimming pool which was closed after a man was admitted to hospital suffering from Legionnaires' disease is not expected to reopen until tomorrow.

The condition of the Lanarkshire man, who has not been named, remained stable yesterday as investigations to identify the possible source of the infection continued.

NHS Lanarkshire has said tests suggested that the Legionella bacteria may have been present in the domestic hot water system connected to the showers and hand basins at Hamilton Water Palace.

The health trust's public health department is leading investigations.

The South Lanarkshire Council-run leisure centre was due to reopen yesterday but the local authority said it remained closed due to a "water pressure problem".

A spokeswoman said this was caused by an air blockage after closing the facility on Tuesday and was not linked to the Legionnaires' probe.

A council spokesman said: "All areas of the Water Palace will remain closed today to install a new pump and check the system. We anticipate that the facility will be fully reopened on Friday."

Scott Fortune, 29, his wife Lorraine, 28, and their daughter, Erin, aged one, from Blantyre, were among those who were disappointed yesterday after turning up for a swim at the facility. Mrs Fortune said: "I am shocked to hear that it is closed because of concerns that someone may have contracted the legionella bug. But I would rather it was shut if there are any worries about it."

Other patrons who turned up yesterday were disappointed at the lack of information given to explain the closure.

Two customer notices posted on the door on Tuesday, which said it would be closed for the remainder of the evening because of a "technical issue", were still there yesterday at 3pm.
