Police in Scotland are helping to investigate the death of a Glasgow woman during a visit to Pakistan.

Sobia Wali, 22, died in the capital, Lahore, on January 24 after travelling to Pakistan nine days earlier with her mother, Safia, and brothers Imran, Usman and Balal to see relatives.

It was reported that the 22-year-old call centre worker had been married in secret to Usman Gulzar, 24, before the trip.

Her family had initially claimed she was killed by food poisoning or a virus.

However, they later said she died after bleeding from gynaecological problems following a report on Wednesday that claimed she had died in Lahore after a botched abortion and that she had been four months' pregnant at the time.

It is understood Ms Wali underwent the abortion in a hospital in Gujranwala but was moved to a more modern private unit in Lahore after she began bleeding.

The British High Commission in Lahore began its own investigation yesterday after receiving a copy of the hospital's medical reports and death certificate.

Detectives in Pakistan have launched an investigation into Ms Wali's death which they say has not been fully explained.

Yesterday, Strathclyde Police confirmed that the force is to carry out its own inquiries in Scotland.

A statement said: "There is a dedicated team of police officers working in the local area to reassure the public and establish the factual circumstances. Strathclyde Police is committed to establishing the facts through a thorough investigation.

"Naturally, the investigation encompasses international co-operation and everything possible is being carried out at this time including ongoing liaison with community leaders."

Ms Wali's father Mohammad Wali, spoke of his grief yesterday after his daughter's death.

He said: "I loved that girl. I've become useless now. I sit like a dead body now. I used to have two daughters, now just one."

Mr Wali said he would not necessarily have rejected Mr Gulzar as a suitor.

Mohammed Sarwar, the Muslim Labour MP for Glasgow Central, said: "It is very sad to hear of the death of Sobia Wali. I have been fully updated regarding the police inquiry into the circumstances and am encouraged that the local community has assisted them fully.

"This is a difficult time for friends, family and the community and I know we will support one another during this time of sadness."
