Residents and traders in the west end of Glasgow are campaigning against plans by Tesco to build a massive retail and housing development at the foot of Byres Road.

More than 1000 people have signed a petition against the 7500-square metre supermarket behind Partick Cross, which would be built along with 900 student flats, 300 private flats and a 600-space underground car park.

Local politicians and home-owners have voiced concerns that the "Tesco Town" development would cause traffic congestion and impact on smaller retailers in the popular area.

Aileen Colleran, councillor for Partick, has lodged a formal objection requesting a hearing on the proposals.

She said: "I have opposed the development because of its scale. One of the strengths of the west end is the diversity of retailers...that could be lost."

A meeting was held last month in which residents voiced their concerns about the impact on the local area.

Patrick Harvie, Green MSP for Glasgow, said he was worried that the development would have a negative effect on the community. "There is a huge amount of strong feeling against these proposals," he said."

Pauline McNeill, MSP for Glasgow Kelvin, added: "My concern about the current proposal is the amount of traffic it is going to bring to that part of Partick Cross."

But a spokesman for Tesco said the supermarket would boost trade for local retailers. "We think there is room for everyone, big and small, he said."
