The Prisoner actor Patrick McGoohan dies

Patrick McGoohan, the actor best known for his role in the cult 1960s TV show The Prisoner, has died in Los Angeles at the age of 80.

The Emmy-winning actor created and starred in the classic series, which was filmed in the Italianate Welsh village Portmeirion.

He died after a short illness, accoridnf to his his son-in-law, film producer Cleve Landsberg.

McGoohan was best known as the title character Six in The Prisoner, a surreal series in which a former spy is held captive in a small village and constantly tries to escape.

He won two Emmys for his work on the Peter Falk detective drama Columbo, and more recently appeared as William Wallace's arch foe King Edward Longshanks in the 1995 Mel Gibson film Braveheart.
