Listeners fired up by the lewd comments made by Jonathan Ross and Russell Brand on Radio 2 may delight in hearing that an effigy of the pair is to be burned at the stake.

Papier mache models of the shamed broadcasters, who provoked a scandal after making obscene phone calls to veteran actor Andrew Sachs on a BBC Radio 2 show, are to be burned at a bonfire night bash.

A 25ft effigy, which shows shamed presenter Ross in one of his trademark lounge suits holding a dog with the head of Brand, is to be set alight in front of more than 20,000 spectators at a party in Edenbridge, in Kent, on Saturday.

The burning emerged as tens of thousands of Scots turned out for official Guy Fawkes Night fireworks displays yesterday.

Brand, currently in Los Angeles on the comedy circuit, resigned from his Radio 2 show last week and Ross was suspended from the BBC for three months without pay after the duo made obscene calls to the actor famed for playing Spanish waiter Manuel in Fawlty Towers.

Charles Laver, co-ordinator of the bonfire society, said: "We chose Jonathan Ross because he's been a big personality in the news lately, along with Russell Brand. They're two little boys who have been caught playing and being silly."

He said the 27ft effigy is made of paper and chicken wire, and that the evening's celebrations will raise money for local charities.

One of the biggest bonfire night displays in Scotland was last night being held at Meadowbank Stadium in Edinburgh. The sell-out display was to feature a performance by Scots X Factor winner Leon Jackson.

Glasgow Fireworks 2008 was put back to tonight to avoid a clash with last night's Celtic vs Manchester United match, and some 50,000 people are expected to pack Glasgow Green.
