Tributes after Dundee United chairman dies
GRAEME SMITHOctober 16 2008

Scotland's First Minister has joined those in the football community paying tribute to Dundee United chairman Eddie Thompson, who has died after a long battle with cancer.

His death was the second blow to his family, three days after his son-in-law Kenneth Mitchell, 38, died when he lost control of his Harley Davidson motorbike on the A90 near the Forth Bridge.

Mr Thompson, 68, had continued to work tirelessly for his beloved club even after he was first diagnosed with prostrate cancer five years ago.

He was at Tannadice little more than two weeks before his death to see a final victory for his team when they defeated Hearts 3-0.

The SPL announced that Saturday's tie between Rangers and Dundee United would be postponed as a mark of respect.

Mr Thompson was born in Glasgow in 1940, trained as an accountant and worked for a catering firm in the city.

When it was bought by Dundee-based wholesalers Watson & Phillip in 1964, he moved to the city and his love affair with the club began.

He left the company after a boardroom split in 1991 and established his own business.

Backed by investment fund 3i he opened his first Morning, Noon and Night convenience store at Bieldside, Aberdeen, in 1991. The business grew rapidly with sales surpassing £4m in the first year.

By 2004, when it was sold to Scotmid, it was generating annual sales of £53m.

First Minister Alex Salmond said: "Eddie Thompson will be greatly missed as a key figure in Scottish football.

"He had a real empathy and connection with the Dundee United support - something it is often difficult for a football chairman to achieve. The fact he did so speaks volumes for the regard in which he was held, and the depth of his commitment to the club."

Lord Provost John Letford said it was a very sad day for Dundee and the club.

Mr Thompson is survived by his wife Cath, children Justine and Stephen and four grandchildren.
