Police praised football fans for their "outstanding" behaviour during yesterday's Scotland v Norway world cup qualifier clash.

They made only four alcohol-related arrests at Hampden stadium in Glasgow, where the teams drew 0-0.

Earlier this week police issued an alcohol warning to Tartan Army fans, telling them that drunken behaviour would not be tolerated at the match.

They warned that anyone found carrying alcohol may be arrested and charged and said they would crack down on anyone who had been drinking excessively.

Yesterday they arrested two people for attempting to enter the stadium while drunk, and two for being drunk and disorderly.

They confiscated 251 bottles and cans in the ground, and issued £40 fines to five people for drinking in the street.

Thirty-four people were not allowed into the stadium because they were too drunk.

Police said the operation had gone well.

Match commander Chief Superintendent Robin Howe described the operation as "a huge success."

He said: "We are really delighted with the result and have nothing but praise for the fans.

"With a capacity crowd of over 52,000 fans at Hampden Park, only four arrests were made at the stadium.

"This is an excellent reflection on those supporters who made the trip."

He added: "Without doubt, the outstanding behaviour of the supporters can only further enhance the tremendous reputation of the Tartan Army."
