A man has been killed in a drive-by shooting in Glasgow city centre.

He is believed to have been the victim of a gangland hit as he left a Cambridge Street bar with a friend. A gunman lying in wait shot them before speeding off on a motorcycle. One man was hit in the neck and the other in the chest.

Both were treated at the scene before being rushed to Glasgow Royal Infirmary, bleeding heavily.

One victim - named locally as 42-year-old George Redmond from the Possil area - died today in hospital.

The incident happened around 10.30 last night as the two walked out of the Waldorf bar.

Emergency services were called and two ambulance crews and a rapid response unit were soon on the scene.

Streets were busy with pub-goers and guests at the nearby Thistle Hotel. They were questioned by police as the hunt for the gunman began.

Part of Cambridge Street was still cordoned off today, with police officers on guard.

The hotel was open, but guests were being directed through a side entrance on to Renfrew Street. Several shops were closed.

Detective Superintendent John Riggans said the investigation was at an early stage, although inquiries were progressing at a "rapid pace".

He added: "Officers will be looking at CCTV footage as well as conducting door-to-door inquiries around the area.

"I would like to appeal to anyone in the area around the time of the shooting to contact 0141 532 3159."
