VIDEO: Driver caught doing 122mph on Borders country road

A driver was caught speeding at 122mph on a 60mph stretch of country road, police said today.

Five other motorists were stopped after reaching more than 100mph in the Borders during a national speed crackdown on rural routes.

The 42-year-old man was caught driving his BMW at more than twice the limit on the A702.

A 27-year-old was found speeding in a Vauxhall Astra at 115mph, and another driver aged 27 drove his Jaguar X-Type at 100mph.

A 42-year-old motorcyclist was caught doing 106mph, a 32-year-old woman drove her BMW at 109mph, and a 41-year-old man was caught speeding in his Audi at 104mph - all on the same stretch of road.

Lothian and Borders Police charged each of the offenders.

Superintendent Alan Duncan said: "While this was a worthwhile exercise from an enforcement point of view, it was disappointing to find so many people driving at such dangerous speeds.

"Driving at such excessive speeds on roads such as the A702 is highly dangerous, and poses a very real risk to other road users.

"We hope that the initiative that has taken place this weekend shows that this kind of activity will not be tolerated.

"Anyone who breaks the speed limit to such an extent can expect to be robustly dealt with."
