Flooding causes chaos for travellers
ALISON CHIESAAugust 22 2008

Commuters faced travel chaos last night as the train line between two major cities was closed after the track flooded.

Services between Aberdeen and Dundee were halted after heavy rains deluged the track in several places.

The weather also brought chaos to the centre of Dundee and led a fire chief to declare it the worst flooding the city had seen for years.

One theory for the severity of the problem was the high tide; when the rainwater tried to run off into rivers and the sea, it was pushed back into the city and came up through sewers and man holes.

The worst area affected by the flooded track appeared to be near the village of Inverkeilor, in Angus, where 200 metres of track was under two metres of water, police said.

Operator First ScotRail said other sections of the line had also been affected.

No attempt was made to pump the water last night, and the track was expected to remain closed this morning.

Tayside Fire and Rescue Service said they dealt with at least 27 flooding-related incidents last night.

Dundee, meanwhile, was hit by a heavy downpour around 5pm, which caused water up to three feet deep to surge through city centre streets.

Several areas were closed during rush hour, causing gridlock as workers tried to make their way home. Seagate, Trades Lane and East Dock Street were all badly hit, Tayside Police said.

About 40 firefighters dealt with the deluge.

Tayside Fire and Rescue incident commander, Stewart Edgar, said it was the worst flooding he had seen in the city for many years.
