Gene Robinson, the openly gay bishop who has been barred from attending the Lambeth Conference with Anglican church leaders this week, is to visit Scotland at the invitation of senior Scots clergy.
The American bishop will attend churches in Glasgow and Edinburgh next month and address congregations before speaking at a church festival event.
Bishop Robinson has been invited by the Very Reverend Kelvin Holdsworth, Provost of St Mary's Episcopal Cathedral in Glasgow, to preach and celebrate the Eucharist on August 3.
Later the same day he will take part in the Festival of Spirituality and Peace at St John's in Princes Street in Edinburgh and will be involved in a conversation session three days later.
The Bishop of New Hampshire was excluded from the conference by Archbishop of Canterbury Dr Rowan Williams, who is thought to have feared his presence would become the major focus of the event.
Church members in Glasgow said they were eagerly anticipating his visit for his reputation as a preacher.
Rev Holdsworth said: "The congregation is delighted to be able to welcome him. It is an uncontroversial invitation from the congregation. Bishop Gene Robinson is one of the best preachers in the world and we are looking forward to hearing him.
"The good news of the gospel is that everyone is welcome at Jesus's table and that is something we live out at St Mary's."
A spokeswoman for the Scottish Episcopal Church said: "The church does not have a view on Bishop Robinson and the Lambeth Conference. Individuals within the church have their own views."
Dr Richard Holloway, former Bishop of Edinburgh, said: "I think he will receive a very warm welcome. I think the reaction will be mixed but the Episcopal church in Scotland is a welcoming church, otherwise he wouldn't have been invited.""
