Gunman raids Glasgow bookies

A suspected gunman threatened staff and stole cash in a daylight robbery at a Glasgow city centre bookies today.

Police said a man entered a Ladbrokes shop on Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow, and demanded cash.

Strathclyde Police said: "He threatened the staff with what appeared to be a firearm and demanded money from them.

"He then ran out of the shop with a three-figure sum of cash.

"The firearm was not discharged at any time and the two staff members, although uninjured, were left extremely shocked."

The suspect was described as white, aged between 27 and 32, with brown hair. He was wearing a dark baseball cap and a grey and black Northface jacket.

The two male workers, aged 27 and 28, were threatened at about 1.25pm.

Detective Constable Julie Mullen urged any witnesses to contact the city centre CID.

Sauchiehall Street is one of the busiest shopping areas in the city.

Wow! The lengths Labour will go to raise an election deposit.

Why no comments allowed on the by-election stories. The Herald gripped by fear like those nightmares where you are walking down the street naked?

I think the Herald is probably sensible in not allowing comments on by election stories - like me they are probably fed up with the few SNP posters that seem to dominate the comments. Even a totally unrelated story finds an SNP poster.

LM - you have it the wrong way round. It is because The Herald manipulates which stories will have comments that overspill happens.

You may not have noticed but some stories start off with comments that are then deleted en masse by the moderator (or censor).

The loser is the newspaper which is already suffering from plummeting sales and advertising revenue. They make it plain that they despise their readers.

That said, I could have made a hard political comment about Scotland not having control of gun law - that's reserved for our masters in London. Instead, I chose humour (albeit feeble) to draw attention to the censorship elsewhere in this sadly, rapidly-declining, once-respected newspaper.

What is your comment on the story?

Dear LM

The Herald is in a sticky position regarding the by-election.

I would prefer they played it straight but at some point I expect someone with a pencil will go nuclear and claim a "ground swell" of support because they bumped into a guy walking his dug!!!!!

The SNP have the will to get their people out making the case for John Mason, which is pretty strong.

Big mountain to climb 13,000 odd, but people are open to listen to them putting their case.

In some cases take advice about the disposal of bricks!

What Margaret Curran offers is simply this, if elected there will only be one representative for the people to seek help instead of two.

That is totally unacceptable in Glasgow East.

She has shot herself in the foot.

As for the other two Labour candidates what does it say that Curran is parachuted in ahead of them?

What happened to democracy?

Is it suspended when boundary changes happen?

Yours sincerely

Given the alarming rise in robberies, physical and verbal abuse against betting shop staff why are others trying to trivialise these serious issues to score political points?

Two people were threatened with a gun at their place of work.

Could these readers apply the same vigour in tackling the major betting shop chains to help prevent serious crime being committed on our high streets?

Firstly thanks to the Herald for reporting on this story and highlighting again the epidemic level of Betting Shop Incidents.

It is a sad day when some people choose to sieze an opportunity too deviate and make light from what is a very serious issue.

The vulnerablity of the workers in this industry is an issue that requires immediate attention not sarcastic comment from mindless fools.

A re-direction of this individuals energy would not go a miss !
