Labour disarray over by-election candidate
Labour's plans for the Glasgow East by-election were thrown into turmoil last night when the party was left without a candidate for the crucial first weekend of campaigning.
Shettleston councillor George Ryan, the favourite for the nomination in the Labour stronghold, was unable to attend a selection meeting in the constituency due to "unforeseen circumstances", according to a party spokesperson. It is understood that Mr Ryan's partner is reluctant for him to seek the nomination but the first that campaign organisers knew of the situation was at last evening's meeting.
With a question mark over Mr Ryan's candidacy his close friend Steven Purcell, leader of Glasgow City Council, will come under party pressure to seek the nomination.
Local Labour party members decided unanimously to postpone their selection until Monday evening. Two other shortlisted candidates - Irene Graham, a former Glasgow councillor, and Doug Maughan, an airline pilot from Stirling - accepted the decision.
This leaves Labour, defending a 13,506 majority in the seat, having to abandon the planned launch of its campaign today and at the disadvantage of not having a candidate it can ask people to vote for while other parties hit the streets this morning.
The SNP said that Labour would now regret moving a writ for the by-election, caused by the resignation of sitting MP David Marshall, with undue haste. The vote will take place in two-and- a-half week's time on Thursday July 24, in the middle of the Glasgow Fair fortnight.

Mmmmm - Interesting delay - I wonder if, having lost their deposit in Henley, they can't raise the deposit for Glasgow East?

What a pantomime.
They couldn't run a monogue.
The voters in Glasgow East are the lucky ones.
Who else can kick Gordon Brown from afar, and get away with it.
I think it's going to be the best fair fortnight yet.
19 days and counting.

So comrade Ryan cannae be bothered going down
tae London town - perhaps he would be better off
with Independence and he would just have to
travel to Edinburgh :)
LOL, what delicious irony if only the election had no been
so rushed then Labour would have had time to prepare :)
Here I think is the real reason they don't want Georgie
Boy being their candidate -
see -tinyurl.com/5hd5ec
Basically he opposed flying the Union flag and God Save
The Queen in Glasgow in favour of flying the
saltire and use the song Flower of Scotland instead :)
Can this Labour farce get any better - I have tears
in my eyes and am not sure how much of it I can
take - perhaps their latest cunning ploy is for the SNP
to die laughing :)
Now the excuse is that he does not want to go down
to Westminster - who can blame him.
All we need now is to have them nominate Foulkes or
Baillie for the circus to be complete.
However most likely it will a Glasgow Labour Councillor,
which reminds me has anybody managed to get their
hands on a copy of Halls of Infamy about the endemic sleaze
in Glasgow City Council ? Apparently it has now been
removed from Borders shelves in Glasgow's West End
and a full scale ban and censorship appears to be
in force. It would serve the SNP greatly if somebody can
their hands on this latest set of Labour sleaze and/or
can track down the author Niall Walker - hopefully
they have not bumped him off - he appears to have
disappeared.

my guess is ryan will wait til monday in case paul hutcheon has the scoop on the real reasons as to why marshall left. if that comes out in the main stream then labour is shot to bits.
expect an announcement on increased commonwealth games funding from london in next 2 weeks, to quell the antagonism about london's olympics only helping london. a return of lotteries money would be a good way without it seeming to be anti english....
the list of mps who gave themselves 24k should be in the advertising, as should the additional costs to owners of old cars , the 10p tax issue and the expenses paid to family members which were undeclared to westminster.
marshall voted to keep it that way, 220k to tina for making tea can be explained away no doubt, it just will not be allowed to be asked as marshall is too ill to answer such questions.....
with ryan , marshall and stephen all having family reasons, a non medical bypass not withstanding in nicol's case, it appears that the kitchen is too hot for kiddies to be left in the vicinity in case they burn themselves doing something ELSE stupid.
labour is considering issuing an advert, vote for us and keep your benefits, scaremongering not about 50000 pounds per person, as that is lies and was shown to be , but hinting who knows what the other nasty parties will do to your bevy allowance, on the basis that is all they have ever needed to say. they may be right. it is however a sad insight that such an approach can win an election!

That said, the Labour cabal is surely the worst we have seen for a very long time. They have zero credibility. Cronies and brown nosers.

The candidate will have the unfortunate distinction of not only just losing a by election, but of seeing the demise of Gordon Broon and New Labour and of forseeing the watershed on the road to Scottish Independence. Only a numpty would seek that distinction.
Little Red Numpty in a rosette is not working any more. This time the British Labour candidate will be under scrutiny as never before. Even the English media and what passes for the Scottish media, will focus in on Labour's disgraceful record in the East End, the "jewel" in Labour's loyalist Crown.

Yes i understand from a post the other day that nearly all the bookies have the SNP favourite to win the Glasgow East election.
From The Telegraph on July 3rd:-
"The bookies set the odds accordingly, with the SNP 8/13 favourites and Labour quoted at 6/5.
However, this afternoon, Ladbrokes has shortened Labour's odds after a flurry of bets to make them joint favourite with the SNP to win the seat at 5/6."

I see the nats have manged to have one story pulled from the front page already!
Steven Purcell will make an excellent member of parliament. He can be squarely credited with bringing the Commonwealth games to the city and his record for fighting for the people of Glasgow is second to none.
The SNP cannot match his solid achievements. Watch as the nats try to bring the whole campaign down to the level of the gutter. Their campaign will have three central themes:-
Oil
Talking down the people of Glasgow
Seperatism
It really does cheapen the political proocess when they engage in this sort of nonsense.
However the people of the East are no mugs (despite what the nats keep telling us). Their battling character is the embodyment of the bulldog British spirit - they will not be blown of course by empty and cheap rhetoric coming from the gnats.
They will do Scotland and Britain proud by returning the labour party and letting the government continue transforming the area.
This victory will be the beginning of the end the SNP - I for one will be raising a glass come the 25th.

I support no political party in this by-election but I have to laugh at "Proud to be Scottish".
You call on Traquair to put up or shut up, whilst proudy hiding behind your "nom de guerre"
You praise Stephen Purcell, a man who is currently pushing through a plan to put Direct and Care services into an arms length private company. Assaulting the terms and conditions of 10,000 Glaswegian home -helps, cleaners and carers amongst the lowest paid employees in the council and, surprise surprise a group of predominantly female workers. the tories didn't even attempt that...
I am sure Stephen Purcell would make a great Labour member of parliament, given their recent vote to preserve allowances which are 1 and a half times the average income in this constituency.
As for talking Scotland down, is that not what Labour does when it says Scotland couldn't stand on it's own two feet? When they say we rely on a subsidy from England?
I am ambivalent about whether we are independent or not, however when I listen to unionist politicians talking about Scotland's prospects standing alone I am always of Gandhi said to Mountbatten, when Mountbatten said India would suffer many mistakes in governing itself:
"Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes."
Gandhi or Purcell, I know who I look up to.
Aye they've certainly transformed the East End over the last 50 years.
This is typical of pathetic, ill-informed Nat sniping. What you don't understand is that Labour have been quietly and diligently working and planning over the long term for the East End, not just buying cheap votes with populist policies - give them just a few more years of power to complete their work and life expectancy there will be down below 60, thereby solving the pensions crisis.

Never mind Halls of Infamy Von Ryan could fill an entire edition of the Digger single handedly. This marks a line - by his actions he tells us that Labour know they are not protected any more.

Tricia McLeish is the solidarity candidate. I've no time for Tommy but she is the genuine article, she is one of Glasgow East's own. I want Mason to win but good luck Tricia I hope people listen to what you have to say.

It will have to be pointed out that New Labour Sleaze will only ever pay attention to marginal seats and ignore their 'safe' seats.
The electorate don't deserve any consideration.
As a financially and morally bankrupt party, New Labour Sleaze can be clearly seen for what they really are.
Selfish, greedy, self serving and arrogant.
Will Steven Purcell end his political 'career' by fighting a lost cause???
I don't think so. And there is the 'Halls of Infamy' which is being investigated by one of the Sundays. When that story breaks that'll be the end of the Glasgow mafia
The whole point of this election is saving Comrade Broon from humiliation, saving the Party and not giving a to$s about the electorate.
They will pay the ultimate price.

It's the fact that he wants to privatise everything he sees which is the problem for me. Where do you get racist from ? I know he's from Yoker but I don't see them as another race.

The people in Glasgow East can have the pleasure of asking the labour big guns why they voted to keep their noses in the trough. Oink Oink.

Quite apart from Cllr Ryan'soposition to the National Anthem and the Union Flag, I believe he is also carrying some political "baggage" following previous disciplinary action taken against him by the Liebour Party.

"[bold]perhaps their latest cunning ploy is for the SNP
to die laughing " -[/bold] Traquair
Great comment - labour are skint but "Mugabe" brown needs to do everything in his power to win this one. Thus Brown is wishing everyone involved in the labour campaign his very best wishes - Luckily for the SNP he is the kiss of death !
Ptbs (pee the bed Sanny?) - labour made the decision for a speedy election and it is now obvious that this was the wrong decision for them. Hung by their own petard - A bit like the crooked wendy's story don't you think ? (I was feeling so sorry for ptbs that I thought I would feed the troll)

I'm amazed at how far Scotland has come in one year! Here we have a 'safe' Labore seat that hasn't a candidate because the party members are feart that their political career will be over before it starts! So who will Labore field if the intelligent candidates say 'no?' Step forward the usual Labore muppet with less brains than a haggis! Someone like Ptbs, in fact!
Step into the breach Ptbs! Walk round the streets of Glasgow East telling all the people you meet that you're a unionist and are out to save them from being Scottish!
Put up or shut up!

Purcell is openly gay (frankly I don't care) however An t-Adaman is not making an anti-gay point, he was being humerous.
You, ptbs, on the other hand, like many numpties are terrified that ordinary unthinking labour voters will start to care about the orientation of labour's candidates - And would thus prefer that this swept, and kept, under the carpet.
Purcell appears to be an able politico (for a numpty) thus I am sure he will avoid this poisoned chalice.

Since london, as always, knows EVERYTHING, let THEM parachute in a candidate, how about a candidate that has NEVER been north of watford, speaks in a south london dialect. Perfect choice. Does not matter male or female, black or white, select this candidate!!
Then the country can start counting the days, before labour will be but a memory.... a painful memory!
Remember london knows everything!
