Lorraine Kelly and Nicola Benedetti to get Dundee degrees

Television presenter Lorraine Kelly is to be honoured by a university for her charity work, it was announced today.

Acclaimed violinist Nicola Benedetti will also be recognised by Dundee University in its summer graduations.

The LK Today presenter and musician will be awarded an honorary doctor of laws.

Kelly, 48, is a former rector of the university.

Principal Sir Alan Langlands said: "She was an extremely popular rector, she remains a strong supporter of this university and the city of Dundee, and she is tireless in her work for charity.

"Lorraine has also been a terrific ambassador for several of the major fundraising campaigns we have run in Dundee, particularly those in support of cardiovascular research."

Fellow Scot Nicola Benedetti won the BBC's Young Musician of the Year competition in 2004 aged 16.

The university described her as a role model for young people.

Sir Alan said: "Nicola Benedetti epitomises everything we want and hope the young people of Scotland can be - determined, successful, modest and hard-working.

"She is a fantastic role model for our young people, not just in her musical career but also in her work for charities including Unicef."

The university previously announced it will be awarding honorary degrees to Dame Vivienne Westwood, author William Boyd and journalist Alan Johnston.

Kelly will receive her degree on June 20. Benedetti will be honoured at a ceremony on July 8.
