One of the team of world-class Eritrean athletes who have set up home in Glasgow after securing political asylum has won a gold medal in the city's Women's 10K race.

Kokob Mehari won the junior event in her first 10K road race yesterday, despite having to stop for around three minutes as a result of sickness halfway through the route.

The 18-year-old, who lives in Glasgow's Red Road flats, could potentially run for Scotland at the 2014 Commonwealth Games if she remains in the UK for five years and secures a British passport.

Ms Mehari was granted asylum with five other Eritreans following the World Cross Country Championships in Edinburgh in April. The group also includes athletes who have won medals at major international events.

Almost 12,000 women took place in the 10K, now in its 16th year, raising around £1m for various charities.

Speaking through an interpreter after the race, Ms Mehari said: "I am very pleased but I should have done much better if I had not been sick."

Well done to the lassie ,she's already a credit to the city and well done to
Scotland for taking her and the other five Eritreans in.
The sooner they get passports sorted out for them the better.
And well done to all the other runners who were part of this event.
