Tributes to Celtic legend Tommy Burns have poured in from politicians, entertainers and football figures after he lost a long-running battle with skin cancer.

The former Scotland international has died. He was 51.

Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell said Burns transcended the divide in Glasgow and that Celtic had "lost one of this club's favourite sons".

"He was a wonderful human being," he added. "In life I think you only really meet several special, special people and Tommy Burns was certainly that."

Prime Minister Gordon Brown was among those who paid tribute to Burns. Celtic chairman and former Home Secretary John Reid described Burns's death as "devastating news", while Alex Salmond remembered him as "an outstanding servant for Celtic and Scotland".

Hundreds of Celtic fans gathered outside Parkhead to pay tribute to Burns, who was born and brought up in Calton, around a mile from the stadium.

His death prompted Rangers, as a mark of respect, to cancel yesterday's scheduled welcoming party for the team, who were due to tour part of Glasgow in an open-top bus. The club staged a low-key homecoming in front of around 1000 fans inside Ibrox.

    Tributes to Tommy Burns:

"It's very sad. He was a real good man." Sir Alex Ferguson, Manchester United manager

"Everyone at the Scottish FA would like to pass on their condolences to the family of Tommy Burns at this very sad time. His passing is a great loss and he will be sadly missed by us all. He was a true gentleman and a magnificent ambassador for Scottish football."

    Scottish Football Association

"I am deeply saddened to hear of Tommy's death. I pray for the repose of his soul and for strength for his wife Rosemary and their children. Tommy had a fine career and every Celtic supporter and Scottish football fan will have their own special memories of a man whose life was dedicated to his family, to football and in particular to Celtic."

You would never hear anybody in football say a bad word about Tommy Burns, and to have been involved in football for so long, that's quite an accolade
    Ally McCoist

    Fergus McCann, former Celtic chairman

"He embodied everything good about the club."

    Davie Provan Former Celtic team-mate

"Motherwell FC have been all too familiar with grief in recent times and received help from all quarters, including immeasurable support from Celtic and indeed, Tommy Burns himself."

    Motherwell FC

"I don't think you will find anyone on this earth who will say a bad word about him."

    Tommy Gemmell
    Lisbon Lion

"I was extremely sad to hear of Tommy Burns' passing. My heart goes out to his family and all his close friends. Tommy wasn't just a great player and a great coach, he was a really wonderful man. He loved Celtic deeply, but, more than anything, he cared about people. Along with everyone who knew him, I've been left with some great memories of him. He always wanted the game to be played positively and in an entertaining way. His heart was totally at Celtic. Tommy was a passionate man and cared deeply about things and he was always somebody you could talk to for advice. For everyone who knew him, they have lost a fine man, but one who will never be forgotten."

    Henrik Larsson
    Celtic legend

"He was one of Celtic's greatest servants - one of the good guys, a winner, with a great sense of humour. A good friend has been taken away."

    Frank McGarvey
    Former Celtic striker

"I'm devastated. I knew he'd had a recurrence but I was still shocked when I heard the news. He did a terrific job at Kilmarnock as player and manager. He was a true gentleman. He always got his teams to play football in the right way."

    Jim Jefferies
    Kilmarnock manager

"My dad asked who the Reading manager was and as soon as he found out it was Tommy Burns he just told me to sign."

    Graeme Murty
    Reading captain

"It's a great loss. His enthusiasm for the game was terrific. He was a very funny man. It was a privilege knowing him."

    Paul Lambert
    Former Celtic captain

"I have memories of Tommy Burns being just the most happy, family-loving individual I think I've ever met in my life."

    Alan McInally
    Former Celtic team-mate

"I have had the good fortune to have known Tommy for many years. He was a true gentleman and he will be a great loss to his club, where he is rightly regarded as a legend, and indeed to Scottish football."

    Campbell Ogilvie
    Hearts managing director

"This is very sad news indeed. Tommy was a terrific player for Celtic, went on to manage the club with distinction and was a key member of their current coaching team. He also played a major part in the resurgence of the Scotland team under Walter Smith."

    Stevie Frail
    Hearts caretaker manager

    "Tommy was an inspiration.

He helped you, he spoke to you, he was just great to work for.

He was absolutely different class, a man-to-man manager, demanding, funny and a great character. He always had a word in your ear and an arm around you. Tommy will be sadly missed but at this time all your thoughts are with the family."

    John Hughes
    Falkirk manager

"Tommy was a fantastically humble guy, never forgot his roots. He was a genuine human being and a fantastic player, a fantastic coach, a Celtic legend, and he'll be sadly missed."

    Alex McLeish
    Birmingham City manager

"We had an ordinary group of players at Kilmarnock but we achieved so much. Tommy got the best out of us."

    Gus MacPherson
    St Mirren manager

Tommy didn't support the same team as me but he was always a gentleman.

One of the telling things for me was that when he was let go by Celtic in the 1990's he was offered the opportunity to leave by a side entrance and he, rightly, refused instead walked out the front door with his head held high.

Integrity, honesty and decency are all adjectives that can easily be attached to the name of Tommy Burns.

It is not often a death outside of close family circles can bring a man to tears at 9 in the morning but this is such a case.
TB was the embodiment of Celtic. In an age of transience, he would never have seen the need to kiss any badges. He lived well and battled hard.
A beautiful footballer, too silky in many ways to grace the rugged pitches of Scotland in the 70s and 80s.
A contemporary passed on. RIP Tommy Burns.
My thoughts are with you and your family.

This is shocking news and so terribly sad. Living in West Kilbride we got used to seeing Tommy around when he brought his beloved Celtic to Seamill (which is an integral part of West Kilbride). When he did so, he himself would walk, usually alone, from the Hydro up the hill and through the Glen to go to church in WK, and on a daily basis. It's about a mile long. He always had time to pat the dog and say 'hello'. He was a very, very nice man. This is one of Scotland's most awful moments.

I'm not a huge football fan, but Tommy Burns' name was known everywhere, and you always heard him being talked about with respect and admiration. This blog is testament to that.

The universal respect and affection for him will perhaps, in the future, be a comfort to his friends and family.

A sad loss and far too young.

There is a time and a place for everything, this is neither the time or place for a comment like that.

BTW - a melanoma is usually a cancerous growth. Tommy deserved neither.

I did not meet Tommy, but I just knew that he was a right decent guy. It's unusual in such a competitive win-at-all-costs sport for a man's honour to be fully retained and apparent for all to see, but Tommy Burns kept his and it shone brightly always.

I know I have already posted, but the news has browned me off. My name is NOT John Clark - it is a fond nick name. I sat with the Lisbon Lion at a Morton reserve game one day and he spoke away to me. I will never forget that. Thus the name.

But as I said I am a Rangers supporter and the news concerning Tommy has ****** me off. What do I really think of Tommy? He had guts. He was a fine player who played with passion.

I also think, and at the time, truly believed, he should be the Scotland manager.

BUT Tommy was a Celt and that is what we will remember him for. Just like John Clark he will be remembered in the highest regard as a fine player. I mean that.

Sincere condolences to the family and friends of Tommy Burns, a class act and a wonderful human being. A mark of his manhood was his love for the "make me a channel of your peace' theme which was central to his faith. A sportsman, a gentleman, and a star in his sport, he was better know as a grandson, son, brother, nephew, husband, father, uncle and grandfather. Those qualities outshone his footballing prowess, his fame and his reputation was rooted in his love of his family.

God need not bless Tommy Burns, the world was blessed by God IN Tommy Burns. In confidence of the resurrection, he will now rejoin those who have gone before him, and await those of us who will follow him, and all the earth, at an appropriate time, in the great and eternal plan of the living loving God, who created all mankind by His only Begotten son, even Jesus Christ.

I know that my redeemer liveth and though worms devour my flesh yet in my flesh shall I see God.

Tommy Burns knew and trusted in such, and his reward will be righteous.

I am a Kilmarnock Supporter who now lives in Brisbane, but I was on the terraces of Rugby Park the day Tommy took us in to the SPL. I had tears running down my cheeks that day, and as I read this sad news today, I again have tears in my eyes. There was a lot said after Tommy went back to Celtic after Killie, but I think all the KFC fans knew that Tommy was a Celtic Man through and through.

My favourite story of the time was how Tommy managed to sign George McCluskey for a box of malteasers and a lollipop! I think that was a sign of how people regarded Tommy Burns in the footballing world.

My condolences to his family. He was a true gent and will be sorely missed.

Tommy was a footballer. And I am a Gers fan. And a very fine he was,

    Tommy had skin cancer,

He also said that the west of Scotland have people a nasty habit of not going to the doctor. Well, I am one of them. BUT I went to the doctor one day and he said I had have an endoscopy. And then he said do you what that is? I never and he then told me what it meant.

Does anybody reading this think I liked the anwer?

Funny? It was not to me.

I thought about it. I honestly was not going to do it. AND then I then I thought my family deserve better than a coward,

    AND I done it.

Tommy TOLD people to look after their family. Don't be a coward and do it if needs be. Think about it.

    May Tommy rest in peace.

    John

Reading the comments above from afar -Columbia to Connecticut, Melbourne to New York, Egypt to Botswana. I know a lot of it will be ex-pats but Tommy Burns was Mr Celtic had that global admiration. A man of unsurpassable faith, dignity and integrity. He was a man of the people and was recognised and admired as such. Celtic loss will be heaven's gain - he has gone from his earthy Paradise to another one from where he will continue to watch over his Bhoys and his family.

The Herald have done a fine job with the picture tribute - Had me in tears at my desk.

Tommy Burns. A Celtic man, but most of all a Wonderful man!
    Rest in Peace Tommy! YNWA

Thanks to the Herald picture desk for a wonderful tribute to Tommy Burns. I'm still drying the tears but for all the right reasons - remembering happy memories.
