Speaker Michael Martin in the clear over wife's taxi journeys
Speaker Michael Martin was today told that the Parliamentary sleaze watchdog has dismissed a complaint about taxi journeys taken by his wife at public expense.
Standards Commissioner John Lyon said the more than £4000 spent by Mary Martin was "reasonable" and within the rules.
The House of Commons Standards and Privileges Committee backed the decision to disregard the concerns of the TaxPayers' Alliance.
In a memorandum, Mr Lyon said £4139.17 had been spent on taxis by Mrs Martin over four years, mainly for shopping trips, and claimed back on expenses.
"The journeys taken met the necessary requirements of Mr Speaker to assist him in carrying out his official duties," he said in a memorandum to the Standards Committee.
"Taking account of the requirements and the cost of alternative provision, the costs were not excessive."

Yet another whitewash decision, an in-house inquiry clearing one of its own. Can't MP's understand that this is the type of decision which makes them figures of contempt by the public because of their greed and snouts-in-the-trough behaviour?
Why couldn't Speaker Martin have paid for these taxi journeys for his wife's shopping out of his considerable salary? He could well afford to do so. That is the point here, not whether or not it contravenes MP's "rules" - made up by MP's for the benefit of MP's.

Is this the same Michael Martin who has obstructed journalists at every turn in their quest to find out MP's expenses? and who spent tax payers money to hire lawyers to obstruct the said journalists? Westminster is a brothel.

What, for goodness' sake, is "reasonable" about this Mrs. Martin using £4000 [bold]that isn't hers[/bold] to pay for taxis to take her shopping?
Can I have that too, please? Can all of us?
Ridiculous!

Really what is the point of having these enquiries. They are a bigger waste of money than the infringements in the 1st place.
May as well give every MP £100,000 a year (or whatever the average is) and tell them no expenses and save themselves the admin and enquiry costs.

It is plain that they will not find anyone guilty as they are all guilty to some degree.
I accept that people will "screw" any system but when "the wife" is also dipping the tax-payers' pocket it only sereves to confirm that they are all "at it" and feel they are immune to censure.
Cynical theiving b'stards!

Why is this a headline, it is the norm for these people to be 'cleared' despite the evidence.
The headline you'll never see though, despite there being no evidence whatsoever is:
[bold]SALMOND CLEARED OF ANY IMPROPRIETY OVER TRUMP[/bold]
Coupled with The Herald's censorship of comments on Scottish political articles (predicted by me a couple of weeks ago !!!) is a sudden emergence of 1707 Union articles. Were these ready to be published after last years election and put on ice? Can anyone shed any light on their timely appearance? Is it related to the disintegration of Labour North and South of the border.
It is puzzling if nothing else.

I think that the Standard's Commissioner deserves the highest praise for his decision, especially for announcing it a week before the Crewe and Nantwich by election.
After all, this poor woman was only shopping for ermine, which is vital if her husband is to carry out his socialist mission to protect vulnerable weans and nyaffs.
If any other goods such as beluga caviare or truffles were purchased at the same time then, it must be pointed out, this was unintentional.
This announcement will bring to an end the candlit vigil which has been taking place in Springburn while the unfortunate Mrs Martin has been under investigation.

Due to the risks of manual handleing (over full bags etc)maybe she should shop on line. I belive tesco will do free home delivery or is it iceland. with the saving she could buy some extra stamps, pens and paper just in case hubby runs out. This would save us loads.

Not to worry, my little truffle hounds, it will soon all be over and we can just write it all off as a bad dream.

For any number of idiotic reasons we are not allowed to comment on the UEFA cup final and Rangers' participation. Good luck to Rangers. It is noted on the radio (radio2 bbc) this morning that this is a great event for 'British' football hopes. I wait with anticipation to hear the Champions League final to be announced in the same way.... Or do you think that will be tagged 'English' football?

unfortunately there is an unwritten convention that the speaker of the pig pen is returned unapposed to his trough.I cannot see the tories or the liberals upsetting the system so hopefully the snp could do the country a service by sending in a candidate to unseat him.
then the problem would be what to we do with the rest of the pigs?

Hopefully in years to come the union flag will regarded in much the same way as it is by the majority at ibrox............as carnival bunting. Nice to see the growing emergence of Saltires though.
Come on 'Grahamski' or 'Hamish' or 'Exile', use one of your pseudonyms and show your suppor for a Scottish team.

Have you seen the little piggies
Crawling in the dirt
And for all the little piggies
Life is getting worse
Always having dirt to play around in.
Have you seen the bigger piggies
In their starched white shirts
You will find the bigger piggies
Stirring up the dirt
Always have clean shirts to play around in.
In their sties with all their backing
They don't care what goes on around
In their eyes there's something lacking
What they need's a **** good whacking.
Everywhere there's lots of piggies
Living piggy lives
You can see them out for dinner
With their piggy wives
Clutching forks and knives to eat their bacon
Have you seen the little piggies

GML
Part of the problem is that in the normal course of events Martin will not be challenged at the ballot box. Normally the speaker is returned in his seat unopposed.
However as normally the speaker is even handed and neutral this should apply, but since Martin is not, Alex Salmond should announce before the next general election that the SNP will fight all Scottish seats at the next election.

g.a. 5:26. OK if I really have to get behind Them! I suppose its better than getting behind that Irish Republican team based in Parkheid, Glesga. But the Union Flag is with us forever mate. The Saltire is proudly displayed within the Union Flag. Thats enough for me.[bold]bold[/bold]

The SNP should stand against Martin. He is MP for one of the poorest constituencies in Scotland, if not Western Europe. His son is the MSP for the area too. They are useless the place is riddled with organised crime, shootings are fairly common. Corruption is rife, think about the Chirnsyde Initiative for one, rumbled on for years, was only closed down when an SNP Councillor got in at a by election.
Get rid of them, taxi fares are not even half of it. I'd tell you more but I like my kneecaps where they are.

Almost 2 years worth of income support for a single person, paying for taxis to take an MPs wife shopping,
Surely MPs should pay their own taxis ,out of their wages , everybody else does.

Hey Observer, that's a **** good idea, I'll introduce a request at the next constituency meeting, to formally put together a petition to HQ., thus the candidates commission consider it. Truth is we don't owe anyone anything.

Violence, crime, unemployment, sectarianism and alcoholism; its a heady mix but they seem to love it.
The Labour Party have done nothing about it over the years, feeding off the poverty to line their own nests.
Hopefully, all that is about to change.
BTW, I don't support Rangers, but come on the Berrs!

Strange choice of words Graham given that you earlier suggested that SNP supporters were against speaker Martin because he 'kicked with the left foot'.
Anyway, I have no problem supporting [bold]any[/bold] Scottish team in Europe, including Celtic. I prefer the Saltire to the green white and orange bunting and the red white and blue bunting.

Right, I've read the article on the snouts in troughs do no wrong. It's to be expected, it's in the nature of those creatures to be so. So I guess it's expected of them. They certainly have no reason to change their ways, why should they when it's sooooo agreeable and gratifying for themselves to remain so.
I saw Bliar on the telly news. He's on a mission to the Middle east, apparently. He said he has an interest in the efficiency of their sewage treatment works. Ah'm sure with with his vast experience of converting sewage into sweet smelling and saleable commodities he will be able to advise the Palestinians on improvements.
Aye, Bliar's an expert on shi1e, right enough..

Fake Aussie - as an SNP supporter I unreservedly condemn the greed and deception of Keith Brown, MSP for Ochil. He stated that he would not take the cash, then changed his story to claim he had to accept the cash as it was a council bonus, but would donate it to charity. The press allege that he has not yet done this.
I condemn [bold]any[/bold] greed or corruption by [bold]any[/bold] MP or MSP or MEP of whatever political party, and that includes the greed of Speaker Martin and his wife, claiming over £4000 of taxi fares for shopping expeditions. How about you, do you also condemn Martin's greed, or does your obvious hatred of the SNP render you incapable of being even handed?

Graham, as an Arab fan I'll be cheering on Rangers tonight as the representatives of Scottish football in the UEFA Cup Final. But I'll lay odds you won't see many Saltires displayed by the Rangers support. You may be proud of the Union flag, but that is the flag of the UK, and Rangers are not representing the UK tonight, just as Manchester United and Chelsea will be representing England in the Champions League Final and not the UK.

GA,6:41PM, Nothing strange George. Michael Martin being a left footer has nothing to do with the fact that many Celtic supporters have more a love of the ROI than Scotland or the Union. Although most of them were probably born in Scotland or other parts of the Union.[bold]bold[/bold]
