Fans launch a most friendly invasion

DAVID LEASK and GERRY BRAIDEN

He came in nothing but the clothes he stood in and with nothing but half a loaf of bread and a tin of Spam to sustain him for the biggest party of his life. Meet Der Waters, Rangers supporter, and one of 100,000 men, women and children determined to celebrate tonight's Rangers Uefa Cup final, win or lose, in the city where their team is playing.

The 43-year-old scaffolder from Johnstone spent last night in a borrowed tent pitched on a rugby field five miles from the City of Manchester Stadium. He won't be at the game. Not in person, anyway. Few of the massive support making their way south will. But he and his fellow supporters passionately believe they can send their players the most powerful message they can: Win it for us, Win it for Scotland.

"I just had to be here," Der said last night, basking in the late evening sunshine at Burnage Rugby Club in Cheshire, the self-styled Bear Camp, where around 4000 fans are making their home. "The locals have been great. They have even let us fly our Saltire on their flagpole."

Der and his friends made their way south in a huge convoy of buses and cars. Many, including Der, began their journey at Ibrox Park. The way was marked by fans. "Every bridge, every flyover we passed on the way down was covered in red, white and blue bunting and union jacks and waving Rangers supporters," said William Hutchison, 46, from Knightswood in Glasgow. "It was something else."

By the time the convoy got to Manchester the main motorway ringroad was choked with coaches bedecked in Union Flags and Lion Rampants. Frustrated motorists had no choice but to enjoy the spectacle.

This was the most friendly of invasions. And the most varied. Among the advancing red-white-and-blue army were footsoldiers from all over the world. There was 79-year Jim Reid from Beith, North Ayrshire, who made the journey after cancelling an operation scheduled for the day of the match. There was Gary Brisbane, from, despite his name, Melbourne, who had jumped on a jumbo jet to England despite missing his daughter Kelsey's fifth birthday, which is today. "My wife is Australian," he said. "She doesn't really understand but she let me go."

Among the throng was Nial MacDougall, an oil engineer from Baku in Azerbaijan, who spent £3000 for the last-minute trip. "I wasn't going to miss this," he said.

All are determined that Rangers fans should cast Scottish football - and Scotland - in the best possible light. John Smeaton, hero of the Glasgow Airport terror attack and avid Teddy Bear, remembered how supporters of his team's arch-rivals celebrated their 2003 Uefa final. "Celtic did Scotland proud in Seville," he said. "Now it is the turn of Rangers fans to show that we are mad - but only for a good time." Rangers fans outnumbered those of their opponents, Zenit St Petersburg, by 10 to one.

It wasn't just the blue half of Glasgow that made it to Manchester.

Two of the city's biggest Celtic supporters were in town, too: Lord Provost Bob Winter and city council leader Steven Purcell. "Even on the motorway there was a real carnival atmosphere and everyone seemed in great spirits," Mr Purcell said. "We stopped at a motorway service station and the banter was terrific. Here I was, one of the most well-known Celtic supporters in Glasgow, on my way to support Rangers and taking some good-natured pelters. As one guy said to me, you've got to put Glasgow first."

First Minister Alex Salmond will join the party. The Hearts supporter will be with Sports Minister Stewart Maxwell, who despite keeping his allegiances close to his chest, has been named by colleagues as a Gers fan. Will McLeish, the First Minister's spokesman and Rangers supporter, said: "This continues the renaissance of our football and we look forward to Rangers returning with the trophy."

Political leaders and celebrities will enjoy the game in comfort - and with a ticket. The real party may be outside the ground tonight.

Tens of thousands of fans are expected to gather before five big screens for the match. Some will spend the night there. "A lot of people won't be able to drive home after the match and will have to sleep in open spaces," admitted Vicky Rosin of Manchester City Council. "At least the weather is nice."

Back at the Bear Camp, Der is poking fun at the couple in the next tent. Ross Cowper, 30, and Jillian Jarvie, from Lanarkshire, have left their three children with granny, determined to be part of the festival - even if it means "kipping" in a tent miles from the stadium. Der nodded at Mr Cowper and said: "He told his missus she was staying at the Hilton."

COME ON RANGERS.
we have a very neat thing to accomplish here; if we win this eufa cup, then we only need to win the european cup to get us the european treble.

Not every club has done that!

COME ON RANGERS.

Come on boys! What an achievement getting there! It should be an inspiration to everyone in Scotland to achieve and believe in themselves. Proud to be a fan!!!! Proud to be Scottish!

Glasgow is now undefended!
Come back John!
Who is going to have a sneaky fag break at critical times so we can be protected?

No mention of the sectarian singing in your report? It was clearly heard last night on Reporting Scotland I'm surprised no-one has picked up on it yet. After all, certain factions of the "media" pounced on a mobile-phone recording of Celtic fans in Barcelona, I'm surprised this has gone unreported.

"Billy Boys" I believe its called? Isn't this the same song which earned Rangers a fine from UEFA recently?

Scotlands Shame.

Nice to see Alex Salmond going to the match on a freebee, when there’s thousands of working class fans unbale to get a ticket. Don’t you think he’s had enough free lunches?

Isn’t it ironic that a man who wants Scottish Independence and wants to break away from the union, will be in a stadium full of Scots waving the Union Jack?

I support neither Old firm team (I'm a Liverpool fan), but good luck toRangers, just a shame these corporate idiots stopped "proper" fans from getting a ticket. MAybe they should have moved it to Old Trafford (Capacity nearly 80,000).

Good news, bad news:

Good news: many Rangers fans fly the saltire, wear kilts and portray themseves as Scottish. This progressive and socially inclusive phenomenon was also seen in Seville.

Bad news: you can still buy Spam.... ;-)

You'll be able to count on one hand the saltires flying tonight.

90% of Rangers fans see themselves as British, your commnet was a bit naive GML. Try living in Govan for a few years, like I did. Then you'll know.

If Rangers win tonight, it'll be great for British football. Especially with Chelsea and Man U in the Big one next week.

I see the sperm banks in Glasgow are facing a shortage crisis this week.

All the w@nkers in Manchester.

Only kidding, Godd luck Rangers. Bring the cup back to Glasgow. We haven't had a Euro cup in Glasgow for 41 years.

Best of luck to Walter Smith and the Mighty Glasgow Rangers.
The "Tengiz 1873 SIMOPS Lodge" will be watching through the night, here in Kazakhstan.

Sour grapes in abundance already.

It was well reported on ITV and BBC sports bulletins that the Chelsea v Man U Champions League cup final was a fantastic advert for English football, the best league in the world.

It was then further reported that the Rangers V Zenit St. Petersburg was a fantastic advert for BRITISH football.

The sour grapes that fuel you Mr Jones and Malcolm allegedly from England will doubtless keep you on here all day dripping your bile.

Some people just walk in the shadows with the wind blowing into their faces, such is their lot in life.

Well done Rangers keep it going, you are a credit to the Scottish nation, reflecting the new found spirit of confidence and self respect and pride that is exemplified by our First Minister of The Scottish Government, Alex Salmond and his excellent cabinet.

GO RANGERS.

ALBA GU BRATH.

PS. Don't stay up to late counting the Saltires, LOL !!!!!!!

You'll probably find that most Rangers fans will agree with the "fantastic advert for British football."

Read my comment properly before making a naive comment, I said that I hope Rangers win tonight, you idiot!!!

And why is it sour grapes for England you muppet?

1)England has 2 teams in the Champions League final.

2) England (Manchester) are holidng the Uefa cup final, and I know for a fact that most English people who will be watching (the UEFA cup is not everyones cup of tea) will support Rangers. A British team that will have fans flying the Union Jack.

Well done Rangers keep it going, you are a credit to the Scottish nation

Obviously know nowt about fottball. Typical woman.

You'll hear "Rule Britannia" sung tonight, not flower of Scotland.

I could not agree more with you Brit Free. However I would not get to hung up about these blighters. Remember you are a Scotsman and they are British so it means nothing to us. We like the rest of Scotland do not share their nationality. Think of them as foreigners and it will pass over your head. They can waive whatever flags they want as long as they don't expect the rest of Scotland to support a foreign team. As for Alex Salmond he has to go to the game as he is the leader in Scotland and cannot show favour. However trust me on this he will be watching through gritted teeth and some embarassment!

Has the Herald gone mad, pages and pages dedicated to a stupid football game but only a few lines for the poor unfortunates in China and Burma who have lost everything.

Just a point for all of you "Scottish" or "British" people fighting over whether Rangers are Scottish or British, they're neitehr they're a business, adn the people who play for the team are sporting mercenaries who will play for any team presuming the pay check is high enough, most of them aren't Scottish or British.

Instead of paying ridiculous amounts of money to see a bunch of overpaid twonks chasing an inflated pigs bladder about and spending hundreds of ££££s on drink, maybe they could spare a thought and some money for the poor people in the Far East who've recently lost their homes, families and livelihoods.

This sort of over-hyped carry on makes me want to vomit

Yes life is purile isn't it. Get over it you sanctamonious ****. we were having a good debate which is nothing to do with what you are talking about. If you must spout your drivel please do so on the appropriate article in The Herald. We were commenting on the column about Rangers and culture is very important to all of our lives including the Burmese. This I am the world nonsense went out with Flares and Cliff Richard!

He came in nothing but the clothes he stood in and with nothing but half a loaf of bread and a tin of Spam to sustain him for the biggest party of his life. Meet Der Waters

Why make it sound that he practically crawled there, don't you think Der Waters hasn't brought money for plenty of beer? Of course!

All are determined that Rangers fans should cast Scottish football - and Scotland - in the best possible light

Er...yep. I'm sure they will when you see a sea of Union Jacks in the crowd. We could play spot the Saltire.

Mr Purcell said. "We stopped at a motorway service station and the banter was terrific. Here I was, one of the most well-known Celtic supporters in Glasgow,

Talk about blowing your own trumpet. Is Purcell claiming to be more "famous" than Connery or Connolly. What's he on? Most of the kids in Glasgow don't know who this man is.

Political leaders and celebrities will enjoy the game in comfort - and with a ticket

Proper fans are missing out because these politicians enjoying freebees. It's nothing to be proud about.

The real party may be outside the ground tonight.

That's because outside, that's where most of the real fans are, y'know, the ones that couldn't get a ticket because of the 20,000 freebees that have been dished out to competition winners and politicians.

Kind of strange that Alex Salmond will be there.

Here's a man who wants Scottish Independence and wants to break away from the Union, yet he's going to be in a stadium full of Scots flying the Union Jack? How bizarre is that? He's not one for missing out on a free lunch is he? Probably the only reason why the toad is going.

I can't believe it took two people to write this article.

Rab Jones so soaked in bile you stay on here all day just to snipe your spite and bitterness. If I could be bothered I would wonder what happened in your sad life that gets you so negative and morose, you really get of on handing out the insults, and you know so much about Scotland that you think Hen Broon is female.

You are so blinded with bitterness you cannot even understand what is being posted to you.

It just shows the power of the human sex drive that someone was prepared to father you. Perhaps you have pondered what life would have been like had you had enough oxygen at birth, maybe that is what gets you being so ugly.

More likely it is impotent rage which we see a lot of from unionist eunuchs these days. Follow your leader poor cultist unionist the Moronic Broon and Alexander are a shining light to you poor eunuchs. The days of the overpromoted crooked unionist liars are at an end, get over it and move on, Scotland has.

82.5% of people in a recent ST poll voted for independence, WOW !!!

GO RANGERS.

I've been on here all day? I've made 5 comments, that probably took me 5 minutes to type out altogether. That's the beauty of having an office with a computer at your fingertips. Although I have to admit, the view from my office could be better.

you know so much about Scotland that you think Hen Broon is female.

Not familiar with the Broons. I prefer to read "proper" written english material, another reason I can't stand that poet Rubber Burns. I'm more of a Shelley?keats man. But I take it you prefer to read comics.

Not too sure the personal insults wee necessary though Hen.

I'm probably everything you're not.

I'm married.

Got two kids and a nice house/car.

Got a good job in the City Centre.

I'm certainly not ugly, although my wife feels I've over done it in the gym, and that I need to go on a strict aerobic workout to get rid of some of my muscle mass.

I don't drink Irn Bru, I don't have ginger hair, I don't drink very much (although I do like a glass of Torres that I have shipped over from Spain by the case every 6 months), and finally I don't like the SPL, I follow the EPL, it's more exciting.

Does that make me any less Scottish?

All the best Rangers.

Or as Hen Brwon would say ALBA GURA BRATH AAHYT UHST AKK KKU JAHAT TRERAF (OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT)

82.5% of people in a recent ST poll voted for independence, WOW !!!

What's that got to do with football? Your cooment is a mish mash of football, politics and personal insults. Please stick to the one subject, it's a lot less confusing.

(I take it you don't mix with people in your work you, are you a cleaner.)

BTW

If you're so anti-unionist, don't watch the match tonight. Because you will see a sea of Union Flags being waved by your fellow Scots in the stadium.

Rab Jones certainly showed his hand there at 3.14pm. Dear, dear.

Rangers and Celtic are Scottish clubs despite their multinational teams, and most of their fans are Scottish too, certainly the ones I know. It is good for Scotland whenever our teams do well. We might even get another UEFA cup place if we keep this up. Or would you prefer to get one place in the intertoto cup?

Since Alex Salmond is a Hearts fan, getting to be first minister is the only way he can get to a European final...

Seriuosly Rab, you must have been so distracted hanging out with your pals in Govan you missed the results of the 1997 devolution referendum. Despite the shameful efforts of Donald Findlay, his unionist Tory gang and their 'dog whistle' politics (invoking the royal family and so on), there was not even a hint of an orange unionist vote. Glasgow and the West voted over 80% in favour of a Scottish parliament. It is a very long time indeed since Teddy Taylor got elected in Cathcart on a red white and blue unionist ticket.

Posted by: Rab Jones, Glasgow on 4:51pm Wed 14 May 08
Ahhhhh GML, but the question is................

How many Saltires are going to be flying tonight?

And how many Union Jacks are going to be flying.

I reckon it'll be 20 - 1 in favour of the British flag.

And in Seville, it was a sea of Irish flags waving, (although I did see 5 saltires) when I watched the DVD of the 2003 final the other week.

Why doesn't these fans show the sam epassion as you, when it comes to being Scottish?

Posted by: GML, right here on 4:55pm Wed 14 May 08
Big Jock fae Falkirk, I strongly disagree with you. I was at the World Cup in France in 1998 along with a couple of guys who support Celtic. On the way back from St Etienne, one of my mates was wearing a Celtic top and a Jags fan started digging him up along the line you are taking -"what are you doing here?" and all that. My mate replied, "I'm Scottish, Celtic are a Scottish club, and they have more players turnign out for Scotland than Partick Thistle do. What are you doing here?" This resulted in a sincere apology and a handshake. We have to put this nonsense behind us (as you may have noticed the Chuckle Borthers starting to do in Ireland.)
Posted by: GML, right here on 5:00pm Wed 14 May 08
Rab
Don't get traditional club colours mixed up with voting intentions. It didn't work for Donald Finlay.

Come on the Rangers! (It's not often I say that, but it's not often they get to a European final.)
Posted by: Rab Jones, Glasgow on 5:01pm Wed 14 May 08
Maybe he was one of the five people out of 20,000 waving the Saltires inside the Seville stadium when they bottled it against Porto.

World Cup France 1998? With the domestic season over, why wasn't your pal wearing a Scotland top to the World Cup. How bizarre!

Was he still a proud Celt after the Brazil match, when Tom Boyd knocked in the own goal to give the Brazilians the win.

As to telling us all about your personal life that beats all, you really do have some personal issues to address. Your feeling of insignificance and inferiority complex comes pouring out in your posts.

At least now you're showing your intellect. Shame.

If I wanted to "dream up a life" I would have been a 6ft handsome bilingual guy working for the Stock Exchange. If you think my life is glamorous (hardly) and unrealistic, what on earth do you do for a living and where do you live. You must be a right tramp, having kids, a job and a house is the norm, isn't it?

Why don't you meet me at Queen Street tomorrow, outside Henry Healys and I'll show you round my office. I'll contact you tomorrow (if you're on the threads).

Gotta go, got to leave the City at half past five and drive to Rouken Glen to pick up a trampoline I bought on ebay. (Woops maybe I don't, maybe I just dreamt that eh Hen? he he he)

Scotlands' shame. Rangers fans have more battle honours than the Scots Guards.. Also more second prizes.

What an embarrassment for the people of Scotland

I see EUFA are looking into the misdemeanors of the Rangers support and have reguested details from the Manchester police and observers...
What a wonderful thing the internet is with U-tube getting 1,000's of hits worldwide.

Another sad occasion for Rangers FC..

When Rangers fans were involved in pitched battles with police in Italy, they blamed 'heavy handed policing' for the trouble.

When Rangers fans were involved in pitched battles with police in Barcelona, they blamed 'heavy handed policing' for the trouble.

And now when Rangers fans were involved in pitched battles with police in Manchester, guess what?

Yes they again blame 'heavy handed policing' for the trouble!

The club itself can't even get it's excuses right.

Martin Bain, with what I thought was a bit of a smirk, claimed that the trouble was caused, not by Rangers fans, but "by those who don't normally attach themselves to the club" whatever that means.

Perhaps this is Rangers Football Club's version of "Big Boys Did it And Ran Away!"

Hot on the heels of this canard, we had David Murray stating that "Any Rangers fan found guilty of the acts (which Bain said Rangers supporters did not commit) would be banned from Ibrox.

Just how is this possible if as Bain claims, it wasn't Rangers fans who were involved in the rioting in the first place?

Excuses, excuses.

Scotland's Shame indeed.
