‘She has to go’: Labour MPs call on Alexander to resign

MICHAEL SETTLE and ROBBIE DINWOODIE

WENDY Alexander was called on by Labour colleagues last night to step down as leader of the party at Holyrood as her brother, Douglas, made clear he supported Gordon Brown and the UK Government's line on an early independence referendum.

After a bad week for Labour, talk among MPs is that it is time for Ms Alexander to go. One told The Herald last night: "For someone who is clearly a very good friend of Gordon Brown's of many years' standing, it's time she went in his best interests."

One view on the Labour back benches is that with two years to go before the next General Election and three before the next Holyrood poll, now would be the right time for a new leader in Scotland to take the helm. The Herald was told there would be a lot of support for a challenger. One Scottish Labour MP insisted: "She has to go."

Other back benchers feel a change would be messy. They ask: who would replace her?

Last night, Channel 4 News reported that a "well-placed minister" said No 10's unsettled line reinforced the impression that the Prime Minister was a "ditherer". Mr Brown has made clear he is awaiting the outcome of the Calman Commission before expressing a view on a referendum.

Conservative leader David Cameron yesterday said: "This sort of disagreement only undermines the Union, only plays into the hands of the SNP and they shouldn't have let it happen."

Douglas Alexander said: "I am a member of the cabinet. I support the government's position."

The First Minister should do everything he can to keep her - she's great fun all round.

I have just worked out why Bendy has been pushing for an early referendum.

With tens of thousands of Rangers fans/gloryhunters out of the country next Wednesday could she be hoping to push through independence by then and have the border closed before Thursday?

OMG we can comment on this!!
PLEEEEEEAAAAASE keep her. As we said when Hurricane Jeck went, she is worth tens of thousands of votes for the SNP.
Scottish News in the Times on-line has the headline ""Wendy Shut Up" from Scottish Labour".

we should have a referendum on whether Wendy should stay on as leader of the SLP group at Holyrood.

According to the latest polls , most of the country disagrees with Bean.

That is not really a reason for singling Wendy out for special treatment.

In fact many at Westminster disagree with Bean, again Wendy is not really out of step here.

The way i see it , Wendy was uncontested in the leadership campaign , unlike Bean.

If anyone should be going it is Bean at least there are people willing to replace him.

wendy must stay.

wendy must stay.

So Broon and wendy are in agreement on the referendum issue does that mean the MPs want broon to go as well then?

this from the times hilarious.

According to Hugo Rifkind
Monday

My secretary asks if I want a coffee. I say “bring it on”, and she does. Then the phone rings. It’s my brother Douglas. I’m the leader of the Labour Party in Scotland. He’s the Secretary of State for International Development. We’re a very impressive family.

“How’s Burma?” I say. “Bugger Burma,” says Douglas. “What’s this you’ve been saying about a referendum on Scottish independence? Gordon has been giving me hell.” I frown. “You? What has it got to do with you?” Douglas says that he’s not sure the PM realises that we are two different people. Either way, Gordon is very confused. He’s not sure whether I want a referendum or not.

“I said, ‘Bring it on’.” I say. “It should be obvious.” “Nothing is obvious for Gordon,” says Douglas. “You know what he’s like. He’s decided that ‘bring it on’ means you don’t want one. Probably because he doesn’t want one. I think you are due a bollocking.” I give a grim little laugh. “Bring. It. On,” I say. “And you can tell him I said that.” “He won’t understand,” says Douglas. “You’d better call him.”

Tuesday

Nobody understands. I don’t know why.

It’s perfectly simple. The Scottish Nationalists want independence, and we don’t. So, they want a referendum, and we don’t want a referendum. But, although we don’t want a referendum, we reckon that if there is one, we want it soon, so that people are more likely to want what we want them to want. Which is to say, not to want anything.

So, in saying that we want one now, we want the SNP to say that they don’t want one now. And they will, because they want to get what they want. And that’s what we want. Because, if they have one when they want, they might get what they want. And who would want that?

I don’t know why Gordon is confused. He must be some kind of idiot.

Wednesday

I still haven’t managed to get through to Gordon. Eventually, he calls me.

“Douglas,” he says. “No,” I say. “What?” says Gordon. “Never mind,” I say. Gordon lapses into a panicked silence. “Bring it on?” I say carefully. “Yes!” says Gordon, who has called to explain that, actually, ‘bring it on’ means that I don’t want a referendum.

“But Gordon,” I tell him. “I do.” “No, Douglas,” says Gordon. “You don’t.” “I’m Wendy,” I remind him.

“No you aren’t,” says Gordon.

Thursday

You’ve got to be careful with Gordon. It’s not that he means to be difficult. It’s just that he doesn’t understand it when people don’t think what he thinks. So he tells everybody else that you think what he thinks, even when you don’t. And they believe him.

“Coffee?” says my secretary. “Bring it on!” I say, but she just wanders away. See?

It’s First Minister’s Questions at midday today, so I have a showdown with Alex Salmond. At about 9.45am, I ask him to meet me for lunch. It’s cunning. I’m messing with his mind.

“Now?” says Salmond. “I’ve just had breakfast. Why would I want lunch at 9.45am?” “Aha!” I say. “So you are ruling out the possibility of lunch?” “Well, aye,” says the First Minister, sounding baffled. “I’ll only want lunch later. At lunchtime.” “Hypocrite!” I say. I can run rings around this man.

Friday

Gordon calls again. “Douglas?” he says. “We need to talk about Burma.” I know he’s the Prime Minister, but I finally snap. “I’m not Douglas!” I say. “I’m Wendy!” “Wendy?” says Gordon.

“Alexander,” I say. “I’m Gordon,” says Gordon. “I know that,” I say. “No you don’t,” says Gordon.

Looks like at long last there could be the long
awaited major Schism of the British Labour
Party which might actually result in the establishing of a separate
and truly Scottish Labour Party which is not beholden to
Westminster. Of course this new party will have to clean
house and get some better talent and do something
about things like their plummeting membership. Also
once they start focusing on Scotland first and foremost
I would hope that will look more reasonably and favourably
towards Independence, especially when they realize
it is in their own best interests since there is a high
chance that post-Independence they could get back
into power (but definitely not with level of talent they
currently have).

What a cheek ! The wendum tells us that the independence referendum is holding Scotland back and that the Scottish people deserve better! All i know is this so called politician has done nothing but dominate the headlines for all the wrong reasons and in doing so has let herself her party and the Scottish people down big time.So if the wendum is going to" bring anything on " may i suggest that should be her immediate resignation followed by a an apology to the Scottish people!
What are you waiting for wendum BRING IT ON PLEEEEEEEEEEAASE!!!

steve no wendy must stay. we nats love wendy alexander it gets better but steve.

Meanwhile, a source close to the First Minister described claims that the SNP was prepared to "cosy up" to a future Tory government at Westminster as "utter rubbish".

Back in Scotland, Ms Alexander was said to be "seriously considering" the idea of bringing forward a motion in Holyrood next month on a referendum.

Under parliamentary rules, Labour are not allowed to bring forward an actual referendum bill as the Scottish Government has published a white paper with the intention of legislating in the lifetime of the parliament. But a motion may embarrass the SNP if they voted it down.

A final decision by Ms Alexander will not be made until Wednesday, after Mr Salmond outlines his programme for the year ahead. She has demanded he includes a referendum bill in that programme.

The tense atmosphere was summed up with speculation Ms Alexander was about to issue a resignation statement. But she had simply cancelled a constituency engagement because her children's babysitter was ill.

Dear Karin,

Point of Order:

Lord Mayor's of London are expected to be "eccentric" (right raving mad for us McChatterers). Thus it is not sexism if Boris stays as if he was a woman he would be expected to be "eccentric" (though perhaps he might be expected to comb his hair....)

Spit laughing here, thanks Karin! But does that mean Bendyism infectious?

Malkie C for leader, then he can resign when he fails to agree with himself and/or any other bugger.

I see Bendy doesn't sit with Jackie B anymore in the debates, is that cos she thinks JB takes doughnuting too far?

In order to do this she needs the support of another political party. Do you think Margo would help her? And wouldn't the Presiding Officer (or whoever) just throw it out because of the ruling?

Stay the course, Ms. Alexander!

Reasons:

1. Who would replace you? (Kerr, Lord X, Baillie?) You're still the best they've got.

2. You are more telegenic than any of the other SLP members.

3. You have passion.

4. You are far more fun than all those stuffed shirts.

Whether as part of GB or as an independent nation, you are a Scot and Scotland needs your passion and experience.

Actually, I don't think Margo qualifies as doesn't the rule state that it needs the support of another *party*? After Thursday's FMQ Stevens might do it just for revenge over the dressing down, but I don't ken than an independent would qualify.....correct me if I'm wrong!

Come on let's be fair, she has lost the support of her brother in her campaign to launch an Independence Referendum Campaign but she has attracted to her right shoulder Lord Forsyth who has clearly recognised the brillianceof Wendy's tactics.

What they need to work out now is how "socialist" Wendy and right wing Michael Forsyth can work hand and hand to dish it to the SNP.

Personally speaking as a nationalist I can't wait!

As the great leader has already stated "Bring it on"

WENDY Alexander was called on by Labour colleagues last night to step down as leader of the party at Holyrood
The days are over when the Union can foist mediocrity on Scotland.

We used to think substandard in our politicians an everyday norm. We had nothing else with which to compare it. We know now what is vastly better; we are enjoying being in the professional capacity to decline was is good for what is better.

Substandard is no longer acceptable.

This entire fiasco has shown the Scottish electorate the difference between mediocrity and competence, between competence and acute skill, and between party loyalty and dedication to the interests of a country. Perceived standards have move up many notches. Tolerance of unevenness and poor performance in our politicians has dropped considerably.

There is no going back.

If Ms. Alexander has taught us anything it is that there is no room for the unskilled, the incompetent, the party hack, certainly none for the pretendy politician, in a modern Scotland. It is another sign of our awakening to the benefits of independence.

Meanwhile....

Jackie Baillie goes on a hunger strike and causes massive redundacies in the pie making industry.

Andy Kerr tries to help by taking up the slack and disappears under the deluge of pies.

Margaret Curran introduces a private members bill to ban the sale of Chinese takeaway in Scotland.

Ian Kerr amends the bill to eliminate the drawing of straws

Nicol Stephen complains about an awful stench but cannot bear to open his eyes

Mrs. Doubtfire calls David Cameron and pledges to double the number of Tory seats in Scotland.

David Cameron is beside himself with glee until Mundell introduces himself as THE tory member from Scotland.

And poor Des keeps banging on the bars and screaming with frustration.

Good Guardian article on Brown by Matin Kettle
http://www.guardian.
co.uk/commentisfree/
2008/may/10/labour.s
cotland

"Brown is set in his ways. His ways are tactical, triangulatory and increasingly old-fashioned. He remains fixated on the Daily Mail. His response to Frank Field's campaign about the effects of his tax changes on the poor was classic old politics: first he vehemently denied it; then he sent out his nasties to try to take his critics down; then, I am told, he tried to buy Field off - twice - with a government job. Only when that failed did he then concede, extremely grudgingly, that he had got anything wrong.

These were not the responses of a man who understands change. His preposterous 20-hour days - the Sarah Brown profile in the June issue of Vogue reveals that he is often still working at 4am - will become 22-hour days and at some point, he believes, the voters will realise that he is right. To put it at its gentlest, this is what Joan Didion calls magical thinking."
