16 post offices on islands to close but three put on hold
DAVID ROSS, Highland CorrespondentMay 10 2008
The closure of 16 post offices serving some of Scotland's most remote communities has been confirmed, while a stay of execution has been granted to three island branches.

The branches to close as part of the latest rationalisation programme by the Post Office in order to meet the UK Government's target of 2500 closures are: Sidinish and Tigharry in North Uist; Gress, Grimshader, Knock, Leurbost, Borve, Breasclete, Shader and South Dell in Lewis; Burray, Harray, Rendall and Swannay in Orkney; and Camb and Levenwick in Shetland.

However, Northton in Harris and Bragar and Skigersta in Lewis are still under review and a final decision will be announced shortly.

Sally Buchanan, the Post Office's network development manager for Scotland, said: "These are difficult decisions which have not been taken lightly. We have considered very carefully all the comments made during the public consultation."

Postwatch Scotland had suggested the introduction of mobile services in the Western Isles. The Post Office refused, but agreed to undertake a review in a year's time.

Alan Alexander, chairman of Postwatch Scotland, said: "The unique combination of geographical and social circumstances in the area means creative solutions are required to help communities continue to have access to post office services.

"We welcome the fact that Post Office Ltd has looked into this as a potential option, and is committed to a review of local provision in 12 months."

Alistair Carmichael, LibDem MP for Orkney and Shetland, said: "This is a disappointing outcome. It is also the wrong decision.

"It leaves the Post Office in a position whereby they are failing to provide the level of service to people in the south of Shetland that they are entitled to."

Angus MacNeil, SNP MP for the Western Isles, said: "While obviously disappointed that 10 post offices will be closing in the Western Isles, it is pleasing that three have reached the next stage."
