Granted asylum: the Eritrean athletes ready to run for Scotland

Scotland has acquired a ready-made team of world-class athletes in a group of Eritreans who have been granted political asylum.
Three men and three women who competed at the World Cross Country Championships in Edinburgh five weeks ago applied for asylum and four have been granted. The others expect to hear this week. Given that precedent, the legal firm advising them is optimistic they will also be given Home Office approval.
A seventh Eritrean, who did not race in Edinburgh, won the recent Tom Scott road race, a classic on the Scottish athletics calendar, having already been granted Home Office clearance.
The group includes junior and senior world championship track finalists and some have won medals in major international events. Some of their performances are superior to existing Scottish records. However, now that asylum has been granted, they must wait a minimum of five years before a UK passport is granted. Given that returning home would mean imprisonment and torture, or worse, they seem certain to remain.
They would then become eligible to run for Britain and for Scotland, probably the year before the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow at the earliest.
The athletes, who have a new home at the Red Road flats in Glasgow, have indicated they want to stay in Scotland where they have been befriended by the Eritrean community.
They have all joined the Shettleston Harriers, the Glasgow East End club which has a proud history of community and social welfare, who have paid their entry to forthcoming races where they are sure to have an immediate impact.
The Eritreans were conscripted into the army where they can be forced to fight or work as what members of their community in Scotland describe as slave labour. One in 20 of Eritrea's 4.4 million population are in the military and round-ups at gunpoint of people of military age are a regular occurence. Reporters Without Borders ranks Eritrea last of 169 countries in terms of human rights record.
The athletes sought help after the cross-country event at Holyrood, in Edinburgh, on March 30. Aged from 18 to 29, they are mainly children of subsistence farmers, though some had gone to the capital, Asmara, which has a population of some 570,000. However, the culture shock of being transplanted to Glasgow's Red Road flats has been enormous.
Agostino Desta fought in Eritrea's liberation movement but came to Scotland 18 years ago. He is married to a Scot and has three children. He works as an interpreter with the Glasgow Translation Service, which is supported by the city council.
"When I was introduced to the athletes they were terrified," he said. "They thought I was from the Eritrean embassy. Once they trusted me, they explained they could not go back to the military. Effectively they asked me to help them save their lives. I told them they must carry on running, or they will die here.
"If you are a refugee, with nothing to do, no focus, your mental health suffers. Depression is very common. That's why we don't let people live alone. We try to help wherever we can. They face despair at the likelihood of never being able to go home. Depression sets in because they realise they have effectively abandoned their families for life. Sometimes they are paralysed by freedom."
The refugees are also troubled that parents and families face fines as a result of their defection. Parents could even be imprisoned, while families have to post bonds for children who have fled conscription or deserted. This is routinely up to £1500.
Amanuel Weldeselassie Hagos is one of those already granted asylum. He has contested the world cross-country event four times. His 39th place in Edinburgh, behind his countryman, defending world champion Zersenay Tadesse (not among those seeking asylum) is his poorest. Little wonder, after four days hanging around Cairo waiting for a visa, and then being caught up in the chaos at Heathrow. He ran 13min 35.59sec for 10th in the 5000m at last year's African Games in Algiers. Only six Scots have ever run that fast and none for 11 years.
"I was in the 11th grade when they came to my school and rounded up all the boys of my age, for military service," he said. "I wanted to go to college. Instead I spent the 12th grade doing basic training as a soldier. Often they take the teachers as well."
Amanuel is now 29. Once in the army you can be there until you are over 40.
Mr Agostino says these athletes are the lucky ones. Some Eritreans come out through the desert, into Somalia.
"People desert from the military, often in sand storms, and head west into Somalia. They cross Africa in trucks and then try to get across the Mediterranean by boat. Three out of 10 boats sink.
"Many in the military are not soldiers. They are just forced labour. In 2008 we are the only country in the world with slavery."
Mr Agostino says that Amnesty International and Human Rights watch reports do not exaggerate. Punishment and torture in the forces is routine. Prisoners are suspended from trees with their arms tied behind their backs, a technique known as "almaz" or diamond. They are locked in freight containers with ferocious temperatures by day, and near zero at night.
Neil Barnes, of Glasgow solicitors McAuley & McCarthy, who has been looking after the asylum applications, has processed many similar ones. "The cases are either political or religious, but once you leave the country illegally, or don't go back, it becomes political."
The group are all Orthodox Christians. Last Easter weekend they went to church in Kirkcaldy. "Afterwards we had ingera and zigne (bread and lamb). It's a traditional dish," said Mr Agostino. "We all eat together. It's part of my job with the Eritrean community to find anyone living alone."
As they walk around the grass outside the Red Road YMCA, Tsegai Tewelde, 18, says the goats he grew up with "would eat all this in a day".
All of them are firm. They aim to stay in Scotland, and run for their new country.
"I want to stay here for my life," said Mr Tewelde.
A country without basic human rights
DOUG GILLON
Human Rights Watch, in its 2006 annual report, noted the Eritrean government had used the excuse that the country remains at war to refuse to implement the 1997 constitution, which respects civil and political rights.
It said the government had carried out unremitting attacks on democratic institutions, arresting political opponents, destroying the private press, and imprisoning anyone thought to challenge government policies.
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office Country Profile of November 2005 listed human rights concerns: "Detention without charge is common. Freedom of expression is severely restricted and political critics and journalists have been held for long periods."
Amnesty International reports torture being "systematically practised within the army for interrogation and punishment, particularly of conscription-evaders, deserters, soldiers accused of military offences, and members of minority churches. Torture is also used against some political prisoners. Furthermore, the atrocious conditions under which many political prisoners are held amount to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment."
Some detainees reportedly were rolled around in oil drums, abused by fellow prisoners, and the women sexually abused. Some reportedly suffer from partial paralysis as a result of their torture.
Amnesty reported in December 2006 that 500 relatives of conscription evaders were arrested and ordered to produce the missing conscripts or pay a £600 fine. Those who failed to comply were forced to serve six months in the army in place of the missing relative.
The US State Department has reported "unlawful killings by security forces, including some resulting from torture, numerous reports of torture and physical beatings of prisoners, particularly draft evaders".

According to the United Nations, if you are a refugee fleeing your country. You should go to the nearest adjacent safe country. Not hop on a plane with your 10 bairns and go to the country with the best benefits system.

If an African dictator is wrecking his country, whats it got to do with us ?
If my next door neighbour is beating his wife and kids . Does that mean I have to take in the wife and kids and look after them and be responsible for them. No way, Jose.

A country is made up of laws. If you dont have laws, you have chaos. This is what we have at the present moment. The government makes laws but they dont enforce some laws. For instance, park your car in the wrong place or bring fags and booze into the country. The government is down on you like a ton of bricks because they want the tax and fines.
Bring in ilegal immigrants in to the country. The government doesnt want to enforce their own law by removing them.

Why did these runners, run all the way to Britain. Why did they not run to their nearest safe country. Answer - they were running towards their (our) free houses and benefits.
‘‘Scotland has acquired a ready-made team of world-class athletes in a group of Eritreans who have been granted political asylum.’’
Not so.
Glasgow has acquired another ready made team of free-loading scroungers who have been granted free accommodation, free NHS treatment, free financial benefits et al.

This is the facts
A .1997. Labour government decides to have a dispersal policy of immigrants across Britain because London and the south east social sevices cant cope.
B. 1998 Charlie Gordon knows the population of Glasgow is falling from 1 million in the 1950s down to 500.000 now. Charlie Gordon needs new blood to fill in Glasgows tax black hole.
C.1999 Charlie Gordon jumps on the immigrant band wagon.
The Glasgow labour council gets £500 million grants from central government to rehouse the immigrants.
In the name of God why are they doing this, are they insane I hear
you cry. Well, im glad you have asked me that question. The multicultural lobby are a tiny bunch of dedicated zealots and fanatics. They are like the animal rights terrorists. They dont like Scotland as it is . What they want is to radically alter and change the make up of the country and fragment the society.
No wonder labour is cockk a hoop. The muliticutural zealots consists of lots of public sector workers, social workers, translators . human rights lawyers. They all know how to milk the benefits system. You can be rest assured of that. Pigs in the trough. Oink, Oink.
Plus as we all know immigrants are more likely to vote liebour. So liebour wants to gerry mander the whole country.

Wullie in the name of the wee man what are you on about, Scotland is made up largely of people who have moved here, even your own name "William" came to this country as a result of the Normans, we have huge influences and influxes of people down through the ages. The name of our country Scotland comes form Irish immigrants, we have influxes from Scandinavia, the lowlands, Ireland, Wales, England, ore recently their were huge influxes before and after the First war, before and after the second war, from all parts of the old empire.
History has taught us that each group of people coming here bring much to our country and enhance and enriched our culture, language and country.
Here is a simple test for you pick up a phone book and try to work out where all the names came from, their is a rich tapestry to our history.
I welcome these folk to Scotland, and hope they settle well, hopefully it is not too long until they are allowed to work and earn their keep.

Tell you what Gavin. Let's have no border controls or restrictions whats so ever. Lets bring in 1. 5 Billion Chinese, 900 million Indians, 800 million, Africans and 700 million Arabs into Scotland. If you let in one, you have to let them all in. Is that what you want ?
Ps. I prefer immigrants every time. At least the immigrants are house trained and speak good English unlike primitive drunken Glaswegians.

I get a bit narked about this; I do welcome the guys from Eritrea, good luck to them, but jobs... what will they or can they do, have they passed their English test and citizens test?
I think they got in within 5 weeks because they filled out the right forms.
I phoned immigration for my wife in February, they sent the forms which were duly filled out and returned only to get a relpy, sorry wrong forms - they sent me the 2007 form and the forms had changed in the mean-time - so they have been returned and we are now waiting.
This is the third time immigration have moved the goal posts in two years.

Not so. There was , probably still is, a family of immigrants to Glasgow who built a fire and did all their cooking on the living room floor because they didn’t know what the cooker was for. I kid you not.
Probably only discovered because the immigrant family living below thought their overhead solar heating was turned up too high. (joke)
Not so sure about the ‘‘good English’’ - we still have difficulty in understanding the *‘‘immigrants’’ who were born here.
*That will set a few tongues rolling.
PS Don’t be too cruel on Observer - she’s obviously one of the primitive drunks.

The only people that have been claiming benefits for years are lazy white scots who under labour have found a cushy number earning more thna many low paid earners by staying on benefits.
Check your facts, it's all available at the Treasury for download

To Wullie and Blockem,
Why don't you read the facts before spouting your nonsense. These people were in Scotland to take part in a sporting event and took their chance to claim asylum while here, just as many athletes/dancers/tra
de delegates from Iron Curtain countries did during the cold war.
You should know about asylum, you've obviously escaped from one.

Phil Edinburgh 9.26 am says
''Whereas Carnwarth prefers suicide bombers from HAMAS''
Good one Phil. I find it very ironic that the multicultural lefties love muslim terrorists and hate jews and Israel with a passion.
A Palistinian Arab immigrant was living in my tenement close. He was selling drugs and got 5 years in prison. So the punch line is, we welcomed this immigrant arab into our country and he abused our hospitalitiy.

Multicultural liberals turn a blind eye to all this because they are so anti semitic and anti zionist.. The bottom is this . '' Carnbitch '' is a jew baiting nazi. End of story.

Oh here you are again Wullie, spewing out your foul racist bile. People who bandy the word nazi about as if it was a schoolyard insult show huge disrespect to the victims of the Holocaust. But then that is the level of debate we have come to expect from you. BTW there is a diffeence between being Jewish and being a Zionist. Ps have you managed to extend your knowledge of Israel beyond watching endless reruns of ''Exodus'' ?

From the herald today.
Illegal immigrants: employer prosecutions soar
''There has been a major increase in the number of employers prosecuted for hiring illegal immigrants, it was reported today.
In the two months since a change in the law came into effect at the end of February, 137 firms have been caught employing staff illegally.
The figure is 10 times more than the number caught in the whole of 2007, and more than double the number of companies prosecuted in the last decade.'''
Everytime an immigrant come's here and gets a job. He throws a Scot out of a job.

A question for Wullie, oor resident ranting racist, what’s with all the hatred and the bile? What’s upset you so badly that you come out with crap that even the nutters in the BNP would be ashamed of?
Scotland has a strong tradition of supporting people who have fled from oppression and persecution, put aside your hatred and let people live in peace. The last thing that anyone needs who has escaped fear and terror in their own country is to be hounded by prejudice here, gie it a rest.

And if the prosecutions have risen surely that means those investigating illegal immigrants are doing the job we pay them to do?
But then again when have you ever let the facts get in the way of the nonsense you spout.

Here's an idea - how about we place trade sanctions on every country we have refugees from. If we are to acknowledge that these countries abuse human rights so badly that we shelter their fleeing citizens why is it "business as usual" when it comes to trade? Surely we should be applying some deterrent to make these regimes change their ways?
I think this would be a much more humanitarian response than simply taking in the few that manage to get here.

From the Herald , Trevor Philips is from Jamica.
Race watchdog warns against ‘uncontrolled immigration’
Uncontrolled immigration has led to a "cold war" between ethnic communities, according to the head of Britain's race watchdog.
Trevor Phillips, chairman of the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC), believes the policy failures risk engendering racism among millions of professionals.
Mr Phillips set out his concerns yesterday in an address to mark the 40th anniversary of Enoch Powell's "rivers of blood" speech - in which the Tory front bencher warned of disastrous social consequences if immigration levels were not reduced.
While Mr Phillips stressed that the dire predictions have not come true and immigration has not been too high, he said the influx has had worrying effects.
"Powell predicted hot' conflict and violence. However, we have seen the emergence of a kind of cold war in some parts of the country, where very separate communities exist side by side, with poor communication across racial or religious lines," Mr Phillips said.
"In essence, Powell so discredited any talk of planning or control that it gave rise to a migration policy in which government knew too little about what was going on.
"Ironically, Powellism and the weakening of control it engendered may have led Britain to admitting more immigrants rather than fewer."
Mr Phillips warned ministers they are boosting anti-immigration parties such as the BNP by failing to respond to reasonable concerns from large sections of the "settled" population.
"For every professional woman who is able to go to work because she has a Polish nanny, there is a mother who watches her child struggle in a classroom where a harassed teacher faces too many children with too many languages between them," he said.
"Wanting a better deal for her child doesn't make her anti-immigrant, but if we can't find a better answer to her despair then she soon will be.
"For every boss whose bacon is saved by the importation of skilled IT or health professionals, there are a thousand people who wonder every day why they have to put up with the misery of a packed train or bus - if they can get on in the first place.
"Wanting an infrastructure that doesn't make getting to work daily hell doesn't make someone a natural voter for an anti-immigrant party. But it soon will."
Mr Phillips delivered his speech to an audience of around 200 people in the same Birmingham hotel where Mr Powell inflamed the public debate in 1968.
Shadow Home Secretary David Davis said: "Mr Phillips raises a brave and timely warning and points out the consequences of a disastrous loss of immigration controls.
"Whilst managed immigration is for the benefit of the country, uncontrolled immigration can lead to serious problems."
Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg said Mr Phillips was right to highlight "significant public concern" over immigration.
"We need better planning to predict new demand on public services. We need an overhaul of the way money is transferred from Whitehall to those local authorities experiencing sharp popula-tion changes. And we need imagination to deal with the legacy of years of illegal immigration."
But Immigration Minister Liam Byrne said: "I've said consistently the British public is right to demand changes to Britain's immigration system.
"That is why 2008 sees the biggest changes for 45 years including a points system like the one in Australia, a single border force, compulsory ID cards for foreign nationals and the reintroduction of a system to count people in and out of Britain so we know precisely who is here."

From the Herald. immigrant rapist from Chad, abuses our hospitality.
Asylum seeker raped two men in Glasgow city centre
A failed asylum seeker raped vulnerable young men in Glasgow city centre, a court heard today.
At the High Court in Glasgow 30-year-old Hissein Atie was convicted after trial of raping two men and indecently assaulting two others.
Atie, a security guard, prowled the streets of Glasgow looking for men to attack.
The offences were committed between January 25 and July 23, last year.
Atie, who arrived in Britain in 2000 from Chad in West Africa, was finally trapped by DNA evidence.
At the time of the last attack Atie, who had been granted bail from Glasgow Sheriff Court for police assault and alleged indecency six weeks earlier, was being sought by the Home Office who wanted to remove him from the country.
Prosecutor Dorothy Bain QC said of Atie: "He is a sexual predator and a complete and utter danger to the public.
"He can sense his victims' vulnerability and singles them out for attack. He uses violence. He is incapable of self control in sexual matters."
She added: "He is a citizen of Chad in West Africa, a failed asylum seeker and for him all rights of appeal have expired.
"At the time of the last offence the Home Office was seeking to have him removed from the country. A deportation notice has been served on him."
He is a sexual predator and a complete and utter danger to the public
Dorothy Bain QC
Atie's first victim was a 21-year-old man who was crying in Buchanan Street, Glasgow, on January 25, last year, after a blazing row with his partner.
Atie asked the man if he was alright before dragging him into Springfield Lane where he removed his trousers and forced him to repeatedly perform a sex act.
The man eventually managed to ran away and was later found by his partner curled up in a shop doorway and so distressed that he was unable to speak for five minutes.
Victim number two was found by police wandering the city centre streets on 13 May, last year, after being beaten and sodomised by Atie.
Atie took the 23-year-old man, who was upset after a row with his girlfriend, to a flat, forcibly removed his clothing and forced him to have sex.
Victim number three an 18-year-old managed to run away after Atie tried to kiss him and prevent him leaving his flat on June 1, last year.
Victim number four was offered accommodation for the night by Atie after he found him in George Square, Glasgow, upset and crying on July 25, last year.
Atie took the 23-year-old, who was very drunk, to his flat in Meadowpark Street, Glasgow.
The man woke up to find Atie raping him.
After his ordeal he managed to phone the police who arrived at the flat and arrested Atie.
The jury heard that Atie's DNA was recovered from one of his victims and from the underwear of another.
None of Atie's victims can be named for legal reasons.
After trial Atie was convicted of two charges of sodomony - male rape - and two charges of indecent assault.
He was also found guilty of police assault and breach of the peace In evidence Atie denied all the charges against him and claimed the DNA evidence had been planted on him.
He said: "They are telling lies. People are jealous about my house, my car and my job."
Temporary judge Ian Peebles QC deferred sentence on Atie for background reports and placed him on the sex offenders' register.
He told Atie: "I will be considering the matter of your deportation."
Solicitor advocate Paul Burns, defending, will give his plea in mitigation at the next court hearing.
