Lord Laidlaw seeks help for sex addiction after lurid revelations
 |
| BLAMES ADDICTION: Irvine Laidlaw |
Douglas Fraser: "I invite any Scottish politicians to write to me with a full confession of their wrong-doing"
With his homes in Monaco, South Africa and the French Riveria, a yacht, his own vineyard and private jet, Irvine Laidlaw is used to the good life. The son of a mill owner, from Keith, near Aberdeen, the Tory peer spent years building up the world's largest conference organising business, which he sold three years ago for nearly £770m.
Until this weekend, the 65-year-old was perhaps best known for his philanthropy, funding inner city and academies and youth projects for disadvantaged children in Scotland.
Yet yesterday, following a tabloid article featuring allegations of prostitutes, cocaine and a 22-year-old Vogue model, Scotland's fourth-richest man admitted he was being treated for sex addiction.
The article in a Sunday newspaper alleged Lord Laidlaw of Rothiemay flew prostitutes from Britain to a £6000-a-night hotel suite in Monte Carlo, where they drank champagne, before indulging in lesbian and bondage sex acts.
Lord Laidlaw said, in a letter to the newspaper, that he had not read the story "but the basis was likely to be correct". He added he was "deeply sorry for the embarrassment" caused to friends and colleagues, apologised "from the bottom of my heart" and confessed he should have been "stronger in resisting the temptations".
He disclosed how, with the help of his wife, Christine, he was receiving treatment for "sex addiction", a condition he claimed he had been suffering from all his adult life.
The Monaco-based peer is due soon to undergo six weeks of therapy in South Africa.
He added: "I am seeking long-term expert help, not to cure me, but to prevent any relapse into unacceptable behaviours. I am also planning to make a £1m donation to a UK addiction charity to help others in similar circumstances fight their addiction."
In the tabloid account, one of Lord Laidlaw's recent sex parties was said to have involved a 22-year-old Vogue model, three prostitutes, a male gigolo and a trilingual bisexual. Cocaine was made available but it was stressed the Tory peer did not take the illegal drug.
Over the years, the peer is said to have more or less single-handedly bankrolled the Scottish Conservatives and has loaned or donated Tory HQ around £6m. He is also one of the key benefactors to Boris Johnson's bid for the London mayoralty, having handed over £25,000 to the Henley MP's campaign to oust Ken Livingstone.
Labour vice-chairwoman Dawn Butler called on David Cameron to return the £6m or so the Conservatives have received from Lord Laidlaw.
The MP for Brent South in London said: "Everyone will be pretty appalled by this depraved and degrading treatment of prostitutes by the Tories' chief donor and the man bankrolling Boris Johnson's campaign.
"If they have any respect for the women of this country, I hope David Cameron and Boris Johnson will return the millions of pounds they have been given by Lord Laidlaw or hand over the money to a charity helping abused women."
Ennobled in 2004, when he gave an undertaking he would become tax-resident in Britain, Lord Laidlaw, still based in the Mediterranean, has fallen foul of the authorities and has taken a leave of absence from the House of Lords while he sorts out his tax affairs.
It is not thought there will be an early resolution to the dispute with Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs as there are calls for him to pay tax on his income since becoming a peer. However, this would involve paying tax on the profit made from the sale of his company; the bill is estimated to be around £50m.
His long-term survival in the Lords is in doubt. Although there are two private members' bills - one in the Commons and one in the Lords - aiming to secure a ban on MPs and peers who are tax exiles, these are likely to get nowhere but the UK Government is considering whether to include such a proposal
in its own forthcoming Constitutional Reform Bill.
The peer has a love of fast boats, fast cars and helicopters. As well as his £3m home in Monte Carlo, he has a £4m vineyard on the French Riviera, a £10m estate near Capetown, a £2m home in London's Eaton Square, a mansion in Scotland and a £14m home in Hampshire, which is up for sale.
He founded the Laidlaw Youth Project and has funded inner city academics and youth projects for disadvantaged children in Scotland.
Lord Laidlaw has said that he intends to give away much of his wealth in the future. But his last £1m donation to charity for the treatment of sex addicts is likely to gain the biggest publicity.
In his statement, he said: "Sexual addiction is comparable to the other, better known addictions such as drug, alcohol and gambling. Many people suffer different types of this disease. There is no cure for it and self-help is rarely successful. But having an addiction is not excuse for my behaviour ... I hope that, in time, people will be able to understand
and forgive me as I fight this difficult, personal battle."

My mate says if any of you out there know of a charity for sex addicts post it now.

The last throes of the British Empire appear to manifesting
itself as an episode of the Jerry Springer show, especially
the Scottish contingent where we have :
. Lord Watson the drunken firebug.
. Lord Foulkes the drunken attacker of policeman and pensioners
and now we
. Lord Laidlaw sex maniac playing sex games with 4 girls, one gigolo and a tri-lingual bisexual.
On the bright side at least we are getting some entertainment
as Scotland extracts itself from the farce of what remains
of the British Empire.

Let's keep the term for substances abuse, please. Laidlaw is the epitomy of the super-wealthy and their insatiability. This man is simply another upstart spiv who has been honoured, titled and praised in every way by those with whom he has so much in common.
People like Laidlaw refuse to pay their way in society and directly contribute to our lack of funds for schools, hospitals, pensions and services that any ethical society should be providing. Like all his pals who use the same scams and share the same contempt for society Laidlaw has been consistently presented to us as someone to be admired.
My sadness is tiny, measured, and exclusively reserved for his innocent family. The contributions due to us all from this debauched, unsavoury, selfish person should be pursued in the same vigorous way North Lanarkshire Council pursue families who owe them money; usually low paid working people, hundreds of whom have been bankrupted by the council's legal department over debts of 1500 pounds and the like.
His plan to 'give' 1million of his vast fortune to 'addictions charities' is akin to me giving a fiver to some cause. In fact, it is a cynical variation of the stereotypical hypocritical public figure caught with his drawers round his ankles who then parades the 'devoted wife and children' for the tv cameras. It seems the Tories, to whom Laidlaw has given many millions of pounds in return for his life peerage, are once again tainted by the sleazy lifestyle choices of one of their most prominent figures. It is alarming that it comes at a time when some of their reactionary public mouthpieces are busying themselves with a concerted attack on drug addicts, calling for longer jail terms and harsher punishment for genuine addicts - despite the evidence that this is of no benefit to anyone.
Laidlaw is a man who has made and makes conscious lifestyle choices to use women (and men it seems) to satisfy his own particular sexual desires and stuffs lots of Peruvian marching powder up his nose. In doing so he has clearly committed criminal acts. It is illegal to be in possession of Class A drugs of which cocaine is one, while the male and female prostitutes he has 'hired' must involve criminal behaviour.
He is carved from the same ugly tree as the majority of his fellow travellers who dodge paying their dues and who view people as just another commodity to be used and abused for their personal goals and gratification.

"a 22-year-old Vogue model, three prostitutes, a male gigolo and a trilingual bisexual"...
...some people would pay good money for that type of addiction! Oh - he did in fact, quite a lot.
And he admits the addiction following a tabloid release, not before. Would he have "admitted" it if the somewhat lurid facts had not been made public? One wonders what the South African therapy consists of - more and more bizarre. Why South Africa? Didn't realise it was famous for sex addiction therapy, but we're learning more every day.

I bet the prozzies, gigilo, etc at least got paid a fair whack (pun intended) for the work they did.
If only the present Govt and "honerable" Opposition weren't so keen to f**k the rest of the population with hidden taxes, pitiful minimum wages too.
Personally I'd rather be butt f**ked on the French Rivera, on board a luxury yacht with a nose full of the old marching powder than get the same asking if you'd "like fries with that?" in McDonalds.
Comments?

There is a strong smell of hypocrisy here. Holy Wullie is alive and well and writing for the tabloids. Don't tell me that no journalist or editor would ever be tempted into a bit of extra marital, however they are happy to mock those others who do, especially if there is a streak of the bizarre or it involves the rich and famous.
At the end of the day we are talking about consenting adults. The labour hackette's comment about the poor prostitutes being exploited made me laugh. Those ladies got flown to Monaco and handsomely rewarded. Very few people get exploited and walk away with that kind of money. If she wants to see exploitation there will be plenty examples of it in the backstreets of any large city. This isn't it.
For a man of 65 to be having it off with multiple prostitutes is very good going for his age. There are a lot of people who would envy him. Keep the condemnation for those who hurt other people.

Ah the milk of human kindness flows ever through the comments curdled, as usual, byt he envy and spite that characterises so much of 'opinion' in Scotland.
As far as I'm concerned, what Laidlaw does with his money and his private parts is none of my business and I applaud him for using at least some of his money for charitable purposes. It's a shame that some Piers Morgan wannabe, desperate for this week's 'Wot A Shocka!' headline brought this embarassment on him but that's the risk you run when you play these kind of games and I have no sympathy for Laidlaw's embarassment.
As for the Labour spokesthing's comments, that just further diminishes my opinion of Labour as a political force.

It's not what anyone does in their private life that bothers me - good luck to them if they are not hurting anyone, it's this idea one has to call it a medical condition. Addicted to sex? Isn't that just '****' pure and simple?
Maybe Laidlaw's therapy is to hand over a million quid every time he gets a mucky thought... he'll be signing on the buroo this time tomorrow then...

I am also planning to make a £1 million donation to a UK addiction charity to help others in similar circumstances fight their addiction".
I'm sure you will all join me in wishing Wullie Well with his problem.

The strain of constantly posting Quotes from Enoch Powell and Winston Churchill has taken its toll.
Yes said Wullie i'm addicted to this type of posting. He added, "I am seeking long- term expert help, not to cure me, but to prevent any relapse into unacceptable behaviours. I am also planning to make a £1 million donation to a UK addiction charity to help others in similar circumstances fight their addiction".
I'm sure you will all join me in wishing Wullie Well with his problem.

the allegations were "largely correct". Does that mean that he was involved in the posession and supply of a Class A drug? Was he procuring prostitues? Did he knowingly supply prostitutes for others?
Theres 3 charges for the police to be going on with, Oh and the £50M he owes the tax man.
No doubt he'll find a rehab clinic for people who are alergic to paying tax.

Love sick blues? In the late 70-s a psychologist and researcher, Patrick Carnes, was instrumental in the initial identification and treatment of sexual addiction as a condition. After a te--year research he estimated about 8% of the total population of men and 3% of women are sexually addicted. That adds up to 15m people who suffer from this condition.
The beginnings of sexual addiction are usually noted up in adolescence or childhood. It is found that 60% of sexual addicts were abused by someone in their childhood.
I wonder if brain surgery is an option to get cured instead of a trilingual, eh, what was it again?

With every day that passes it becomes clearer that the Tories are the only party who support the right of consenting adults to get up to whaterver they want behind closed doors.. though personally, I think tri-lingual bisexuals should be available to all on the NHS and not just the priveliged few!

Good grief ! 65 and getting up to these antics ! What does he eat for breakfast ?
The Tories always have good sex scandals. Have Labour ever had a sex scandal ? They usually seem to get caught with their trousers up.

Why is a confession always connected to wrongdoing? It doesn't have to be, does it?
