16 youths arrested in E Ayrshire gang raids

Police in East Ayrshire have arrested 16 youths in a series of dawn raids aimed at cracking down on gangs in the region.

The teenagers are aged between 16 and 18 and were arrested in Drongan and Auchinleck.

All are in custody and will appear at Ayr Sheriff Court tomorrow.

It is understood an 18-year-old woman was also arrested on Monday in connection with the inquiry.

The operation was led by Strathclyde Police's new gang taskforce, which is trying to reduce gang violence across the force area.

Nice bit of political PR for Strathclyde Police, but a total waste of time. Every night within our communities there are gangs of youths destroying the quality of life for our citizens and nothing is done about it.

Until you actually contact the Police, to ask for help, are you made aware about how hopeless they are. Here are two examples. A disturbance in a youth facility. The youth was ejected and the Police contacted. An hour and a half later the Police called the youth facility to ask if the disturbance had subsided. A no show.

The other example a drunk who was smoking in a public place was challenged by the staff and asked to leave. The drunk raised his hand to a female member of staff. He was ejected but remained within the vicinity of the establishment. The Police were contacted. again no show.

The initiative in East Ayrshire is just a sticking plaster. Until there are more Police out there, patrolling our communities, taking a zero tolerance approach we will continue to have one of the most ineffectual Police Forces in the world. Now you see why this is just a stunt to try and restore faith in public confidence.....no chance!

Great picture opportunity and pr for Strathclyde, but, in the execution of these arrest warrants where the door is smashed to smithereens, if their parents have no convictions for gang warfare and are absolutely innocent, why don't the polis just knock first? Well aren't I just a big cynic, not much of a photo op where a polis just chaps a door and asks "is yer wean in?"

The response time to non-emergency calls by Strathclyde Police are abysmal 90 minutes to 2 hours is the norm, and the neds know it.

Part of the problem is that when you phone them you get a call centre, I assume it's in Glasgow, staffed by people who have no local knowledge of the area you are phoning from. True your call gets answered quicker than if you called the local office, but I never waited as long.

cos dafty

if you simply knock on a gang members door ,one who has access to bladed weapons or firearms you give him achance to arm himself so that you dont have police officers seriously injured or killed,or is that what someone like YOU would like to read abot in the papers?

Tip of the iceberg. They should be having constant patrols around these young miscreants and the primo bawbags in Muirkirk.

Too little too late and all for show. The police have very little power other than to harass motorists and move people for parking on yellow lines. The truth is that it begins at home. Not with all of neds but the majority. Parents are more interested in what goes on in their own lives rather than their kids. I've watched parents and they are far too soft and not willing to use a firm hand or they just can't be bothered. There is nothing wrong with a good slap around the ears when necessary(though no doubt a lot of do gooder humanitarians will disagree). I've never been one for standing back and doing nothing and when I see neds doing something, to my own or neighbours propery, I charge head on and deal with them. There will come a time when they will try to gang up on me and I will defend myself whatever the consequences. So when their little neds are lying in hospital or worse and I'm in a jail cell the parents can either blame themselves or the police because it is they that left people like myself with no option but to retaliate.
