Video report

Passengers were last night warned to beware of a third day of flight chaos at Heathrow's Terminal 5 today as a further 54 air trips were cancelled.

As travellers had to deal with a second day of airline chaos since the new terminal opened on Thursday, beleaguered British Airways chief executive Willie Walsh warned of more to come today.

Passengers have already been left with travel plans in disarray as nearly 70 flights were cancelled on Thursday, marring the opening day of the flagship £4.3bn terminal, with a further 80 trips scrapped yesterday.

The flights affected today, which amount to 16% of the traffic going in and out of Heathrow, will be from the airline's European and domestic short-haul schedule.

Mr Walsh said yesterday: "We've had a much better start today. While there are still some problems to overcome we are planning to operate a larger proportion of our flying programme tomorrow.

"I would expect some disruption, but I think it will get better every day as we become accustomed to the building and the quirks of the systems.

"I'd like to apologise to those customers who have suffered disrupted journeys or baggage delays. Our staff in the terminal are being supported by around 450 volunteers and they're working really hard to look after our customers and offer them the world-class experience that we know Terminal 5 can deliver."

Most travel websites try to route you through Heathrow and this leads to congestion. Living in Scotland it is far better to travel through Schipoll, Paris and Copenhagen are also options. These airports are much more pleasant than Heathrow. Travelling by bus between the terminals at Heathrow is like being on the set of Bladerunner, especially when it is raining. It must seem a horrible bleak place to tourists using the airport, perhaps the stark surroundings will distract them from the high probability of them having no luggage at their destination

Peronally I use Dubai as my Hub as they fly direct to Scotland on Emirates without the hassle of Heathrow!
The answer for Scots travelling long haul is therefore not to use airlines with Heathrow as their hub and boycott london based carriers.

The question which should be asked is Why does the government in London let the UK airlines all congregate there??
In the US every major carrier (continental, delta, United) has a different hub airport (Chicago, Atlanta, Newark, LAX etc).
Time for the government in westminster to stop this centralised policy and devolve the airlines to regional centres like Glasgow, Manchester and Birmingham.

In fact Scotland should have its own Airport Authority to set the routes which suit the economic development of the country.
This system works well for Hong Kong which sets iits own air agreements and does not rely on Bejing to negotiate with the various foreign carriers flying in and out of HK.

Instead of sitting in Avimore telling New labour to "preach to the faihful" and go out and seek alliances with the lib dams and Tories to fight the elected government of Scotland Mr Brown should have been at Heathrow sorting out the mess (or at least experiencing what the travelling public have to put up with) due to his failed transport policies for the country!

The domestic Scots have only themselves to blame if the get screwed flying via Thiefrow, overseas Scots can pick the flight, route, etc. to avoid that sink hole called THIEFROW.

So long as the london government controls everything, there will be NO chance of a change. For every pound spent on airports in the still united kingdom, 99% will be spent in london ( I include the collective mess at Gatwick, and the other so called london airports)

Waken up, TELL your travel agent ( or booking person) how and where you want to fly. I have done that, never a problem, leave it to the agent to book via thiefrow, and..... well you will get the chance to buy new luggage!

Who would wear a taser bracelet in order to fly?

Sounds to me like the chickens are coming home to roost on that old chestnut the tories brought in, ie anyone can manage anything regardless of their experience , as long as they know how to manage!
Look out for more and more examples of this happening (sadly).in modern day Britain.

Well, I doubt that theory would have worked anyway unless the "manager" was very clever and could make distinctions between say biscuit prodution, and health care delivery, but, that aside, they forgot one thing here.... They guy doesn't know how to manage at all!

As expected by some of today's modern management, "incompetence". A big PR failure for BA. Time for Mr Walsh to resign and let someone else have a go.

Very valid points Alistair! Agree with you on all!
