Tesco to have a store in every Scottish postcode
Tesco yesterday extended its retail dominance over the whole of Scotland with the announcement it is to have a superstore in every one of the country's postcode areas for the first time.
The supermarket giant made its move into the Northern and Western Isles - the last "Tesco-free" areas in the country - with the purchase of six stores from rival Somerfield yesterday.
It means that the Harrogate postcode area in Yorkshire is the last area of the UK without such a retail presence.
The purchase of the Somerfield stores ensures that Tesco will have a presence in Orkney, Shetland, Lewis and Wester Ross. Stores in Aberdeen and Paisley were also included in the deal.
There had been a campaign to keep the islands Tesco-free, but opposition yesterday was muted because the firm confirmed it was buying existing stores.
Tesco said that the 470 jobs at the six stores would be safeguarded and confirmed there would be further investment in each store - there would also potentially be further job opportunities. It would not reveal the price it had paid Somerfield.
Doug Wilson, Tesco's Corporate Affairs Manager, said of the his company's arrival in Lerwick, Kirkwall, Stornoway, Ullapool, Aberdeen and Paisley: "These new locations are something of
a jewel in the crown for Tesco
in Scotland."

Is there to be no escape?
Perhaps Lord FOO's demonic "CyberNats" will get up a campaign against
T(he)
E(nglish)
S(upply)
C
O(mpany).
Of the acronym's origins: "True Story", as Wullie , Aberdeen would say. He would probably add that Lord FOO buys his Haig Dimple there but take that with a pich of granite salt.

Tescos don't safeguard jobs when they take over a store. The make each member of staff reapply for their job. In my wee town more than half lost their jobs and were replaced by 'outsiders'. Many people still refuse to shop there and use the much smaller, but much friendlier Somerfield.

In some of the islands the Coop charge like The Light Brigade. A little competition might be good. How can the Coop charge an extra 30p on a tin or 45p on a melon? Just how much is "carriage"?

Come on subeditors, this is a serious newspaper, please pay attention to the copy. The fact that Tesco bought a Somerfield store in Aberdeen (which one is it, incidentally?) doesn't mean an "arrival" in Aberdeen for them. There are enormous Tescos at Bridge of Don and Westhill already. You wouldn't have said they "arrived" in Glasgow if they bought one Somerfield store with a G postcode....

Tesco have managed to close many of the smaller shops where I live. The Co-op is far too expensive to provide any level of competition
This should be stopped before it gets out of hand and Tesco has a complete monopoly of the food supply chain in Scotland, with all the profits disappearing south of the border.

I believe that Lady Porter now lives in Israel.
Most of the big shareholders probably do. Small shareholders never benefit anywhere near to the extent that the directors and city investors do. Big money always tend to flow in one direction, towards the city and major investors.

And not before time! It will be good to have Tesco on the doorstep, rather than having to travel to Inverness to get their products. Will be interesting to see what effect it has on Stornoway over time though, especially regarding Sunday opening......

Tesco is alwaystrumpting its sourcing of Scottish produce yet in my local store its Norwegian salmon and Rep of Ireland meat. They have also stopped selling Mothers Pride tattie scones in favour of their own. And in their English stores their is as much if not more Irish produce[a foreign country] than Scottish. In Ireland they make sure their produce is given priority and rightly so. In Scotland there is less and less of our own produce available and more English.Sounds petty ?just look around the next time you are in one of their stores. They have been aloud to dominate the food retail buisiness in Scotland at our expense.

Tesco yesterday extended its retail dominance over the whole of Scotland with the announcement it is to have a superstore in every one of the country's postcode areas for the first time.
Easy, when there are no problems with planning permission. I do hope they're paying Wendy more than the occasional 995 we know about - it seems such a small slice of such a very big cake.

She probably realised that if things go pearshaped in the Mid East she needs somewhere to go.

This, of course, parallels the Wal-Mart syndrome in the US. State of Vermont got out of the Wal Mart web by passing laws forbidding Wal-Mart mega stores to be built there. Bottom line is though that retail giants like Wal Mart and Tesco with their low paying jobs and immoral profits could not exist if we did not demand the low prices their mega buying can produce. If we didn't demand and buy £1.00 chickens then Tesco wouldn't sell them. If we didn't demand and buy off the rack not high street clothes from China and Myanmar then Tesco wouldn't sell them. Saddest part is that the people who produce these low priced goods are struggling to survive and if the Wal Marts and Tesco's didn't buy their products they would be jobless. Nice little catch 22 which can only be attributed to human greed. Ours, theirs, everyone's.

I love the comments denigrating Tesco because it's a contributor to the Labour party and others saying they've been 'aloud' (sic) to dominate the market.
Tesco, like every other multinational, will contribute its 'political' money where it thinks it'll do most good for the company. If the Tories suddenly become ascendant in Britain, you'll no doubt see Tesco money flowing their way.
As for being allowed to dominate the market, they weren't allowed any such thing. They're simply better at what it takes than their competitors are.

The fact that Tesco is at long last to operate in Stornoway is excellent news for the island's inhabitants as at long last we will be able to purchase goods ad services at prices similar to those of the Scottish Mainland. In particular , it will mean that when Tesco are in a positioon to reytail petrol at the prices of all their UK stores, wew on the islad of Lewis and Harris will no longer be held to ranspm ad be compelled to pay ( as we are doing at the momet ) no less that £ 1.18 per litre for unleaded petrol. Thak goodess Lord Cohen had the foresight ad audacity to commence trading as TESCO all these years ago and built of one of the most successful businesses in the commercial world. We now long fro the day when we can purchase in Strornoway all the goods which are sold by Tesco elsewhere ; the island families will be extremely grateful to Tesco for their patient approach to the pursuit of already establkished busiess on the island- a cuning commercial move ! Floreat Tesco !
A Stornoway Ratepayer of at least 5 years !

I believe they have bought the Wellington Road store which is near me and to the south of the city and I for one am really pleased as at the moment I travel by 2 busses in order to shop at the Danestone one. At the moment Asda dominates here in terms of large superstores and Somerfield in terms of medium ones. I actually use all of them for different reasons but Tesco is and always has been my overall favourite...many years ago before Aberdeen had a store I used to look forward to going to the one in Dundee city centre. I used to shop at the one in my home town when they did green shield stamps. I am not a fan of Lady Porter but what she did in Westminster is a seperate issue. All large businesses are the same including the one I work for....profit driven! I also buy food from farmers markets when I can but the nature of my job means I often miss them. For instance I would never buy eggs other than free range and from a farm with happy hens and like to buy free range chicken and pork also.
